Book Beginnings on Friday November 17, 2011

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Katy from A Few More Pages. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading.

Here is my opening sentence this week or my opening sentence + one more.  It is from Hal Spacejock by Simon Hayes:

"Hal Spacejock was hunched over the Black Gull's flight console studying the small chessboard balanced amongst the toggle switches, warning lights and status display.  Recently he'd read an article promoting the ancient game, claiming it would sharpen his mind, improve his memory and increase his attraction to the opposite sex."

I am 40 pages into this and so far it is light, fun and funny.  It is also a free ebook at Barnes and Noble.

  1. Hi Jo,

I am afraid that the genre of this book, would probably mean that I will not be rushing to read it, however I can appreciate the persausive nature of those first lines to make you read on. The lines would not however have led me to believe that the book is lighthearted fun, but something altogether more serious.

I did chuckle a little at the prospect of chess increasing a man's attraction to the opposite sex, as from my point of view that definitely wouldn't be the case.

I am able to play a very rudimentary game of chess, however I rarely, if ever, win. I am sure that if I played more regularly, the complexity of the game would probably sharpen my mind, although I am unsure that memory improvement is not one of the better side effects I have experienced ... I wish!

    Have a good weekend,

    Yvonne

  2. First I looked at the title, and thought it sounded stupid. Then I read the first couple sentences, and thought it sounded pretty funny. Don't judge a book by it's title, apparently!
