I just found out the torch for Book Beginnings on Friday has been passed to Rose City Reader. A big thanks to Katy for hosting and welcome and thanks to Gilion Dumas for continuing this great meme.
I started A Beginner's Guide to Rakes by Suzanne Enoch yesterday after I saw the next book in the series is about to come out. This one got pushed back on my TBR shelf and I forgot about it. Here is how it begins.
"Very few thing in the world could make Oliver Warren, the Marquis of Haybury, flinch. He could count these things on one hand, in fact. The yowling of small children. The squeak of rusted metal. And the mention of that name."

Don't you just know it is going to be a woman's name and they are about to tangle. Here is what Goodreads says about A Beginner's Guide to Rakes.
All of London is abuzz
with the return of the utterly alluring, recently widowed Diane
Benchley. Will she remarry? What will she do with her late husband’s
fortune? Society is shocked by her announcement—at the Grand Ball, of all
places!—that she plans to open an exclusive gentleman’s gaming club in
the family mansion. But no one is more stunned than the Marquis of
Haybury, Oliver Warren.
Years ago, Oliver and Diane shared a private indiscretion. Now Diane threatens to reveal Oliver’s most ungentlemanly secrets…unless he agrees to help her. A notorious gambler—and rake—Oliver is overqualified to educate Diane in the ways and means of running her establishment. But striking a deal with Diane might just be the biggest risk Oliver has ever taken. This time, the only thing he has to lose is his heart…
LOL, Romances are unique in that, not only do we know how it's going to end; but we know what "that next word" is even going to be! :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Jo,
ReplyDeleteGreat opening lines to this story and Oliver's thoughts about children and the squeak of rusty metal, I can sympathise with immediately. It sounds as though Diane has the power to give Oliver a very uncomfortable time of things and I am sure that life certainly isn't going to be dull for him, with her around.
I have read more romance just lately than I have for a long time and have rather enjoyed myself, although it is not a genre that I would consider reading exclusively.
I hope that you enjoy this book and its sequel and that you have a great weekend.
Yvonne
Great opening line! happy reading!
ReplyDeleteWow! I used to read historical romances by the bushel basket and that opening brought me right back to that happy place. :) Great opening!
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining me on Book Beginnings! I am very excited to take over hosting responsibilities.
