Heroes Are My Weakness by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Contemporary Romance

From Goodreads:

The dead of winter.
An isolated island off the coast of Maine.
A man.
A woman.
A sinister house looming over the sea ...

He's a reclusive writer whose macabre imagination creates chilling horror novels. She's a down-on-her-luck actress reduced to staging kids' puppet shows. He knows a dozen ways to kill with his bare hands. She knows a dozen ways to kill with laughs.

But she's not laughing now. When she was a teenager, he terrified her. Now they're trapped together on a snowy island off the coast of Maine. Is he the villain she remembers or has he changed? Her head says no. Her heart says yes.

It's going to be a long, hot winter.

Heroes Are My Weakness is typical of Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ books.  A strong but insecure female and a haunted male are at the heart of the story.  Annie is down on her luck but not crying.  She can live in the cottage on Peregrine Island for 60 days while she decides what to do.  Theo was not supposed to be on the island.  He was her teenage love interest until he turned on her and left her feeling betrayed.  Now he is there because of his writer’s block.

Of course the two cannot keep from being thrown together.  Look for danger as someone tries to make Annie leave the cottage, tension between Annie and Theo, more than one wounded character, great puppets, fun dialog and finally romance.  The book is a little darker than some of Phillips’ books.  There are quite a few red herrings scattered around the book making it harder to see who is trying to run Annie off.  Just when I was sure I knew who was doing what I found I was on the wrong track or maybe I was just being fooled again.

Heroes Are My Weakness is a good addition to Phillip’s books.  If you are a fan you will love it and if you have never read any of her books this is a good introduction.

William Morrow published Heroes Are My Weakness by Susan Elizabeth Phillips in 2014.
