The Beginning:
"Roman struggled to keep his footing in the ankle-deep slog of the muddy river bank."
Page 56:
"James knew early into his pitch that he had failed."
From Time Siege by Wesley Chu. This is book two in the series. I loved book one and am looking forward to settling down for a nice long read.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews #47 - City on Edge by Stefanie Pintoff, Everything We Keep by Kerry Lonsdale, Unraveled by Jennifer Estep
City on Edge by Stefanie Pintoff
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I had a hard time caring about any of the characters in City on Edge. I loved the blurb. A FBI team made up of criminals sounded really good. What kept me form caring was the fact that they never seemed to be a team and they sure did not care for each other. The plot was well developed and the writing was good. It should have been a page turner but it was not. It started off very slow as each character was introduced and a profile was part of each introduction. Then the story line developed. This is book two in the series and I wondered if I would have been more invested in the characters if I had read book one.
Everything We Keep by Kerry Lonsdale
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is not your run of the mill romance. It is one that is truly full of surprises. Aimee Tierney has to come terms with the loss of the man she loves not once but twice. At the same time her career has to take a new route and a new man comes into her live. Everything We Keep has great writing, a fully developed plot that kept me guessing and some interesting well-developed characters. I really recommend this one for all the twists and turns it takes. Look for another surprise at the end. I wonder if it is a teaser for a story featuring a character in Everything We Keep
Unraveled by Jennifer Estep
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
In Bitter Bite Gin Blanco found that she had a new enemy; at least a new to her enemy but one that has been around since she was a child. In Unraveled Estep fleshes out that enemy when she sends Gin and friends on a vacation to the theme park Finnegan Lane, her foster brother, inherits. By the end of the book Gin has a whole new set of enemies to find and fight. Unraveled is a great set up for the next series of Elemental Assassin books. Instead of same old, same old that often happens in a long series there is a new and interesting enemy for Gin and friends

Look Back Wednesday - The Dimensional Shift by Frances Pauli
LOOK BACK WEDNESDAY IS A FEATURE HERE ON THE BLOG. THERE ARE SO MANY REALLY GOOD BOOKS I HAVE REVIEWED ON GOODREADS I DECEIDED TO HIGHLIGHT SOME FROM THE PAST. RIGHT NOW I AM FEATURING BOOKS POSTED ON MY GOODREADS SCIENCE FICTION ROMANCE SHELF. EACH REVIEW IS A DIRECT POST FROM MY GOODREADS REVIEW.
The Dimensional Shift by Frances Pauli
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Science Fiction Romance
I found The Dimensional Shift on the SFR Brigade’s Pitch Contest and went to Barnes and Noble to purchase and download the ebook. This is cute story with an unusual main character. Chloe’s job is cleaning rooms in a local hotel in the northern US. Her job is seasonal as the hotel has few guests in the winter. On one of her last days of the season a woman in room 306 walks in from the balcony while she is cleaning. The only problem is that there should not have been anyone in the room. Drew, the only occupant, was out and when he returned confirmed that the woman must have broken in. Meeting Drew leads to a job offer for Chloe.
Drew offers her a job at twice the pay at a hotel he helps manage. She does not have to move she can commute to work from her living room. The hotel is an inter-dimensional hotel catering to being from different dimensions. Chloe will be working in the human section. Chloe is still cleaning rooms but is drawn into an ongoing mystery. She must use her skills to find the answerers to several question, not the least of which is whether or not her boss, Drew, is interested in her.
I enjoyed the story. At times it was a little slow, mostly because of the world building. The characters were fun and unique. The concept was interesting and lends itself to future stories. In fact the second book featuring Chloe is already out.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews #46 - Shooting at Loons by Margaret Maron, Shadow Rider by Christine Feehan, The Widow's Auction by Sabrina Jeffries
Shooting at Loons by Margaret Maron
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
My library had just received several of the Deborah Knott Mysteries on CD. I had never read any of the books so I picked the one with the earliest copyright. I enjoyed the story. It was a very easy going mystery. There was a lot of background about the location and the people who live there. Nothing moved at a fast pace. There was plenty of time to enjoy the story and the characters while wondering who did what. There were several twist as the story progresses. There were things in the story that dated it but it did fit the time when it was written. It is a good read when you want something a little light with a mystery attached.
Shadow Rider by Christine Feehan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Shadow Rider follows the same path as other Christine Feehan books. The main female character is slightly needy. The main male is over the top with looks, sex drive and dominance. Stefano Ferraro also has a hidden talent; the ability to ride the shadows. That is a talent he has know from birth so he is surprised when he meets Francesca Capello and sees that she has that same talent. From there the story follows the pattern in other books. He wants her, she wants him but has questions. She has a problem that he promises to solve. There is a lot of sex, a lot of redundant prose that I skimmed when I read one of Feehan's books. Since I was listening to this on CD it really hit home how much was repeated and repeated. Not a book I will re-read or listen to but since I knew what to expect I enjoyed it for what it was.
The Widow's Auction by Sabrina Jeffries
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
We have all heard "Don't judge a book by its cover" In The Widow's Auction two people learn not to judge each other by their public face. Isobel Lamberton, the widowed Lady Kingsley and Justin Antony, Lord Warbrooke seem to always be on opposite sides. It takes the night of the widow's auction to bring them together. There they both learn that they have more in common than either suspected. A nice easy read with great characters and good action.

Stacking The Shelves - September 24, 2016
Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books I added to my shelves this week. They may it be physical or virtual. I include books I buy in a physical store or online, books I borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks! Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga at Tynga's Reviews. Follow the link to see what others have on their shelves.
I purchased two books from Barnes and Noble when they had a 40% off coupon for members. The first was a paperback copy of J.D. Robb's Brotherhood in Death. I missed this on when it came out. The second on was a hard cover of Time Siege by Wesley Chu. I loved the first book Time Salvager (follow the link to see my review on Goodreads) and have high hopes for Time Siege.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews #26 - Runway Colton by Karen Whiddon, Cardwell Christmas Crime Scene by B.J. Daniels, Into the Guns by William Dietz
Runaway
Colton by Karen Whiddon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This time it is Piper Colton who is the runaway. Everyone is still trying to find out who happened to her father and someone is framing her for the deed. She asks Cord Maxwell to help her clear her name. He makes a bargain with her and the story takes off from there. The introduction to the Colton family and much of the back story is in pervious books. Even so this can be read as a stand-alone. This is one of those series where there is a mystery that is part of the main plot in each book. The mystery is not solved here but it looks like it might be in the next book. I have been keeping up with the series and look forward to finds out where that missing Colton is. Goodreads did not have a cover for the book.
Cardwell Christmas Crime Scene by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
We are back on the Cardwell Ranch. This time for Christmas and of course another mystery with some new characters. Dee Anna Justice has just learned that she has more family than her father who is in prison. When she arrives at the Cardwell Ranch she finds that her father has called in a favor and asked Beau Tanner to keep her safe. It seems that other half of her family (who she also did not know about) may want her dead. Daniels has written another interesting story set on the Cardwell Ranch.
Into the Guns: The First America Rising Novel by William C. Dietz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It seems that post-apocalyptic is the new rage and William Dietz has added a new addition. Into the Guns is book one in a new series. It has all the elements that make up this series. The destruction around the world is caused by a large meteors hitting the Earth. The story starts with a Army unit in the Pacific Northwest and follows them as everything falls apart then slowly starts to come back together. Into the Guns introduces the characters, sets up the world building, and brings the main plot point into focus. This is book one so it only goes so far. It just stops after one crisis is solved so book two and three for the rest of the story.

Look Back Wednesday - Break Out by Nina Croft
LOOK BACK WEDNESDAY IS A FEATURE HERE ON THE BLOG. THERE ARE SO MANY REALLY GOOD BOOKS I HAVE REVIEWED ON GOODREADS I DECEIDED TO HIGHLIGHT SOME FROM THE PAST. RIGHT NOW I AM FEATURING BOOKS POSTED ON MY GOODREADS SCIENCE FICTION ROMANCE SHELF. EACH REVIEW IS A DIRECT POST FROM MY GOODREADS REVIEW.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Science Fiction with a Vampire space ship captain. I could not resist when I read a review of the second book in this series, Deadly Pursuit. I went over and purchased the first book Break Out.
Richardo Sanchez is a two thousand year old vampire who really knows how to change with the time. In 3048 he is the Captain and owner of the space ship El Cadazor. Skylar Rossaria is on a rescue mission to break a assassin from the most secure prison in the galaxy. She is not what she seems. Her mission is not what she thinks. She hires the El Cadazoe and her attraction to Richardo is a further complication.
Look for an interesting crew, great dialog and a surprise ending. The world building is a little weak. We know that there is a mineral that can give immortality and only the Collective has access but not much more. I read where the second book fills in some of the blanks the first did not.
Break Out is a quick fun read more Science Fiction than Paranormal.
Entangled Publishing released Break Out by Nina Croft in 2011.

Short and Sweet Audio Book Reviews # 45 - Make Me Love You by Johanna Lindsey, Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson, Night Shift by Cahrlaine Harris
Make Me Love You by Johanna Lindsey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I listened to the story from Recorded Books. It caught me attention from the first. I loved Brooke Wentworth and her I will survive and have a better life attitude. Dominic Wolfe was never a total loss even at the first of the story. There was a twist at the end. I anticipated part of the twist but the second part took me by surprise. A nice story using the forced to marry trope. Lindsey managed to include enough new circumstances to make it unique.
Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I have seen this series at my library for several years so decided to give it a try. Undead and Unwed is the first book in the series and sets up the world, the backstory, the characters and a nice plot with elements that can carry over and a solution to the big problem in this book. I loved Nancy Wu who performed the book. Betsy Taylor is very snarky and Wu does a great job getting just the right voice for Betsy. If you like vampires this is a good series to start. Davidson gives her vampires a different twist. Betsy has a unique making and thus can do some things others cannot. There are also some really great side characters to add to the story.
Night Shift by Charlaine Harris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I have to start by saying that when I picked the book up to read it just did not catch me and I put it down. I had the opposite reaction to the audio book. I think most of that was thanks to the performer who did the recording. Her timing and pace were perfect for the story and kept me listening. All of the characters were on hand with the addition of at least one new character. Since this is a trilogy a lot is wrapped up in Night Shift. There is enough left unanswered for another book but Harris has said three and no more. I was satisfied with the ending so if there are no more it will be OK>

Short and Sweet Book Reviews #44 - Wind River Wrangler by Lindsay McKenna, Traces of Guilt by Dee Henderson, Sea Rose Lane by Irene Hannon
Wind River Wrangler by Lindsay McKenna
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This was a big disappointment for me. I generally like Lindsay McKenna's books and in some ways this lived up to her reputation. I liked the characters and the setting. It was the overall plot that left me shaking my head. Shiloh had been stalked for six months and no one looked at her past to discover the stalker. Come on!!! I knew who was doing it before the first 20 pages. Then there was the fact that Shiloh just hid in the corner when someone was turning her door knob. Nothing in the plot rang true after that. I hope the next book in the series has a much better developed and though out plot as the characters and setting deserve something that rings true.
This is a book I received from Amazon Vine in return for a honest review.
Traces of Guilt by Dee Henderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Once again a visited my library on the day new items were put on the shelf. Traces of Guilt was a new audio book and it looked like a interesting mystery. Evie Blackwell is trying to solve two cold cases. It was interesting to see how she looked at things from a new and different angle. I enjoyed listening to the book. The book is filled with interesting characters and the mysteries well developed. This is book one in a new series. I am looking forward to seeing the characters again. This is a Christian Fiction Mystery. I found that religion was dropped in often stopping the flow of the story. It was not enough to keep me from enjoying the book and it would have been a good read if it had been left out.
Sea Rose Lane by Irene Hannon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Another of the new audio books on the shelf on Thursday. I like contemporary romance books that are part of a series so I decided to give this on a try. I was surprised to find that I had another Christian Fiction book. Most of the time they are labeled but someone missed on this one. Hannon did a very good job of working the references to God and Prayer into the fabric of the story. Unlike Traces of Guilt those references did not interrupt the flow of the story. There are some very interesting and different characters in the book. Coming home after loosing a job is a familiar trope but it works really well for the story set in Hope Harbor. My favorite was Charlie. He steels the show even though he is a side character. He is the one that helps guide the story and the characters to their HEA. In fact there is one HEA that is not a romance but comes from a change in the lives of two of the characters. I did like the absence of sex beyond hugs and kisses. It was refreshing not to have to listen to so many body parts.

Emma G. Loves Boyz by Taro Meyer - Book Blast and Giveaway
Emma G. Loves Boyz: A True Love
Journal
by Taro Meyer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: YA/Middle Grade
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Emma G.
is CRAZY about Aaron, lead singer of Boyz3000. Of course, she doesn’t actually
know him, but so what? Feelings are feelings. That is until Josh appears… and
he’s soooooo CUTE. Navigating her two crushes and her middle school life,
especially with eighth-grade hater Renee around, is a challenge. And oh yeah,
she’s got to earn money for an AWESOME trip to the Bahamas to see the band of
her dreams. Hello???? How much can one thirteen-year-old take???
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
“You know that thousands of girls like Aaron,” she
said. “Right?”
“So??”
“So it’s statistically almost impossible that a pop
star boy will date a fan.”
I should have known she’d say something like that.
I wanted to say, “Okay, just forget it.” But instead I said, “Whatever! I mean
I just love his singing and his writing. That’s all.”
But that’s not all. How do you change what you feel
just because some stupid statistics say you don’t have a chance? An article in
Tigerbeat said Aaron had dated a girl from his high school for three months!
And she wasn’t a star! So who knows what can happen? When you feel something,
you have to believe! Your feelings are totally crucial to your life! When I
look at Aaron’s face I get those stomach flutters! And feelings CANNOT BE
IGNORED.
I started thinking about stomach flutters instead
of the essay and wondering why they happen with just one particular boy. Why
can one boy make your stomach go CRAZY????
I called my cousin Elyse to ask what she thought
because she’s older and experienced.
“No one really knows,” she said. “That feeling just
hits you. But you want to make sure that the boy you like, likes you back.”
“How can you tell?”
“Well,” she said after thinking for a minute,
“sometimes boys don’t want you to know they like you. So they look at you like
they are trying to look like they aren’t looking at you or liking you, but
really, they are.
Erotic Character Driven Science Fiction. Lara Santiago is one of my favorite authors of erotica. She always has a good story to go with the sex. This time an astroid has hit the Earth and caused massive damage. Craig Hauser was hired to protect a group living inside a mountain in Colorado. Forced to stay with the group when the astroid hits he must accept a wife. That wife has a mission of her own. She is there to take down the leader of the group. Tattered banners displaying
the sunflower sigil of this dusty frontier holding hung behind the lord and his
men, all of them pressed together like a clutch of hens. The chamber’s walls
looked like they could crumble at any moment, but at least they kept Raz’s
pounding light at bay. Sand infested the rough-cut limestone of the floor, but
Bellamy supposed that was inevitable in such a water-starved place. He busied
himself trying to dislodge the bits of filth ensconced beneath his fingernails
as Lord Lowen droned on. When Bellamy finished his manicure and looked up, he noted
with annoyance that Lowen and his meager retainers did not have sand strewn in
their hair or stuck in the crevasses of their fingernails.
“That’s quite enough,
Lowen,” Bellamy declared, his tone as dismissive as that of a disappointed
tutor. “Scribble your excuses on some parchment to send to our Lord Idris. I’ve
heard enough of them. You are responsible for every drop of water that flows
out from this portion of the aqueduct. That is your oath. You retain your
holdings, and your life, only so long as you uphold that oath. You have
failed.”
Vane has been writing stories since he was eight. It’s been his full time job
for two decades – but not the stories he wanted to write.
Inspired by a lifetime of
reading, beginning with “classics” like Privateers, the Amtrak Wars, Darkover,
and the Belgariad to name a few (yeah, he’s old), Rob has been pecking away in
his spare time. The Joined Realm isn’t the first full length novel Rob has
written, but it’s the first that he felt ready to share. Big thanks to Amazon!
Keep reading and writing.
The Joined Realm is
available on Amazon.com and will
be $0.99 during the tour.
