Crosstalk by Connie Willis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
When is there too much communication. In Crosstalk you find out what happens when you can hear the thoughts of everyone around you. What seems like a great idea turns out to be just the opposite. Briddey Flannigan agrees to a simple procedure and finds out that it has unintended consequences. CB Swartz is one of those. He comes to her rescue and is one of those unintended consequences. The two are really great characters in a book that has many fun and well developed main and side characters. A fun romp filled with laughter while exploring a series topic.
Diffraction by Jess Anastasi
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
The crew of the Imojenna are still after the Reidar. This time it is Kira and Commando Varean Donnelly who are the featured characters. Varean was introduced in the last book when the Reidar stun weapon sent him to his knees. Now he is a prisoner on the Imojenna and Kira as the ship's doctor treats his injuries. I found the story interesting but slowed down by a lot of internal introspection. While parts were written in a very active voice much was written in the passive and it was a bit of a turn off for me. This is space opera and romance and I want action, action, action not a lot of internal thinking slowing the story line down. The plot does move forward and I will continue reading the series to see how they will eventually defeat the Reidar.
The Sheriff's Mail Order Bride by Ann B. Harrison
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
There is just something about Mail Order Brides. Love and romance often follow and it seems easier that going through the whole dating thing. That is what Rory Watson thought when he advertised for a bride. He had seen it work for his brother so why not for him. Gina Taylor seems prefect until she shows up with a child that she forgot to mention. A nice story with a nice amount of tension from both within Rory and Gina and some external from an unexpected source. Book two in a series but does stand alone.
