GENRE: Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Dr. Brigitte Sheen, an ambitious scientist, and her colleague
develop a gene therapy system to extend human life spans. Money owed by a
Chinese investment conglomerate for bearer bonds taken from the shadow
government known as the Horsemen never gets paid—but for good reason. The
Chinese want the anti-aging system, but so do the Horsemen. In a fierce battle
of East versus West, the future of mankind is at stake. Pursued by a crazed
super soldier with enhanced physical abilities, Dr. Sheen, with help from her
husband, Jeremy Hughes, Nikita Patel, and others, must overcome dark intentions
of unseen powers... But are those intentions really that evil?
EXCERPT
Brigitte’s face was as
solemn as a mask. “How can I trust you?”
Roth lifted his chin. “What
do you mean?” He laughed nervously.
“Let’s just say that I’ve
personally had run-ins with certain elements within this government
that seem to be batting for
the wrong team.”
“And what team is that, Dr.
Sheen?”
“The one that will do
anything to see the light of this world extinguished.” She paused. “For good.”
Roth snickered, then leaned
forward, placing his forearms on the table. “You’ve been watching too many
Allen Jones videos.” His eyes were as impregnable as Gibraltar. “I don’t know
these particular elements that you allude to, but let me just say that there is
a dialectic always occurring in the minds of men who want to lead us into the
future. Some of the goals of those wielding power are merely opportunistic.”
She shook her head and
chuckled. “And that’s what bothers me—men. Leading us into our future.” She
looked out the window. “We should be all led by inspiration… a common cause.
Something beyond ourselves.”
“So, you think that our
progress is rudderless? If so, Dr. Sheen, I think you’re rather naive.”
“I didn’t say rudderless,”
insisted Brigitte. “Of course we need strong leadership to take us into the
future. But this leadership needs to be open. It needs to share. It all comes
down to honesty, integrity, and noble purpose. Without inspiration it’s just a
drunkard’s search. And without transparency there is little integrity… no need
for noble purpose.” She hesitated, then leaned forward and placed her forearms
on the table.
“Didn’t Gandhi say that
truth never damages a cause that is just?”
“Oh, you can trust us,
Brigitte. What I’ve told you today is as open as I can be. In fact, you’ve been
brought into”—he made a hand gesture and laughed—“our little circle of trust.”
She smiled, understanding
the joke. “Well, thanks, Jack Burns.”
