Triple Love Score by Brandi Megan Granett

Triple Love Score

GENRE: Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Miranda Shane lives a quiet life among books and letters as a professor in a small upstate town. When the playing-by-the-rules poet throws out convention and begins to use a Scrabble board instead of paper to write, she sets off a chain of events that rattles her carefully planned world.
Her awakening propels her to take risks and seize chances she previously let slip by, including a game-changing offer from the man she let slip away. But when the revelation of an affair with a graduate student threatens the new life Miranda created, she is forced to decide between love or poetry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Miranda played mystery on a double word score with a blank tile. “Bingo,” she chorused. “Fifty points.” She hopped up to do a victory dance. As she did, her foot clipped the table, and the tile bag toppled over.

They both bent to pick them up. He smelled like Old Spice, the way her father did before the chemo made her mom’s nose too sensitive. “You,” Miranda started to say, to ask or to explain why she couldn’t stop staring at him.

“You,” he said in reply.

Then he leaned in closer and pressed his lips against hers. His eyelashes stirred against her cheeks as he closed his eyes. She leaned in closer. And neither one moved to stop. For a very long moment, lips slightly parted, they breathed in the same air, as they hovered in the sweet spot right after a kiss.

Then his phone went off, startling them both.

He snapped backwards and patted down his pockets for the source of the interruption. He stared at the number. “I think I have to take this,” he said. “Some kind of hospital.”

The Other Twin by Nan Dixon - Blurb Blitz and Giveaway

The Other Twin
by Nan Dixon

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Contemporary Series
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Who can resist a neighbor in need?

Nathan Forester doesn't know the first thing about kids. So when the daughter he never knew existed arrives on his doorstep, he needs help, fast! His unlikely ally is next-door neighbor and single mother Cheryl Henshaw. Nathan and Cheryl don't exactly see eye to eye, but neither can say no to a helping hand.

Renovating Fitzgerald House is Nathan's chance to finally prove he's no longer the unreliable twin—and it seems possible with Cheryl by his side. Suddenly their practical arrangement has become something much more. Trust isn't easy, but they're stronger when they work together.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
It was nice having the craziness of feeding two kids and a man at her table. This is what life would have been like if Brad hadn’t died. Cheryl touched her stomach. Maybe they would have had another child.
She watched Nathan cut Isabella’s chicken. There wasn’t a second child in her future, but she could help Nathan with his daughter. Eventually, Nathan and Issy would move on, both physically and emotionally. But she could help for now.
“I cut the potatoes,” Josh told Isabella.
Issy forked a potato and smiled at him. A pixie with dandelion fluff for hair and her father’s heart-breaking brown eyes.
Cheryl brushed the hair out of Isabella’s eyes. “Is it good?”
The little girl nodded.
“I love it.” Nathan grinned.
Josh shot him a glare. And the bubble broke. They weren’t a family. She was just helping out a semiclueless father with a damaged daughter.
As dinner wound down, Isabella set her milk too close to the table’s edge and the plastic glass dropped to the floor.
“Issy.” Nathan’s voice was sharper than normal, but he didn’t yell.
The little girl cringed anyway. Her shoulders curled up to hid her face. A whimper erupted as she bent in two.
“It’s okay. It’s just spilled milk.” Cheryl hurried to the other side of the table. “Josh, can you please grab paper towels? We’ll have this cleaned up in no time.”
Isabella was frozen. Cheryl stroked her back and she jerked. “Nathan, I think she’s done.”
Nathan took the hint and picked up his daughter. She wrapped her limbs around him like a vine.
“It’s okay.” Josh handed a wad of towels to Cheryl. “Sometimes I spill, too. Mom never slaps me.”
“Slaps?” Nathan said. “Issy?”
The girl tucked her head deeper into Nathan’s shoulder, shaking her head. Josh covered his mouth.
“Josh?” Cheryl wiped the floor, trying to keep everything nonchalant. “Has Isabella talked to you?”
“I can’t tell.” Josh looked at Issy. “I promised.”
Short and Sweet Book Reviews #71 - Justice Ascending by Rebecca Zanetti, Designated Daughters by Margaret Maron,The Buzzard Table by Margaret Maron
The Buzzard Table (Deborah Knott Mysteries, #18)The Buzzard Table by Margaret Maron
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Another gentle mystery featuring Deborah Knott. There is a lot of dialog that features the people and everyday events that Deborah, Dwight, their family and others living in Colleton County experience giving a feel for the setting of the story. This mystery is a little different as someone is looking for revenge and Dwight and Deborah are drawn into the resulting murder. Look for a very different ending. Deborah and her family continue to be the center of some very interesting storylines.
Designated Daughters (Deborah Knott Mysteries. #19)Designated Daughters by Margaret Maron
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I found this story to be a little lighter in content and the mystery to be pushed a little further to the side as other events took center stage. They were all connected to the death of Deborah's aunt and it was interesting to see how the dots to events that happened in the past were followed. At the heart of the story was the fact that secrets have a way of coming back to haunt you. I enjoyed the book and as I am hooked on this series will continue to follow Deborah, Dwight and Cal as events and murder seem to find them wherever they go.
Justice Ascending (The Scorpius Syndrome, #3)Justice Ascending by Rebecca Zanetti
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is Trace and Sami's story. Trace is fighting the effects of the Scorpius virus and watching him fight to keep the darkness from overcoming him is a big part of the story. Sami is hiding a secret and fighting her attraction to Trace at the same time. Zanetti wove those two facts into a story that brings more of the world left in the aftermath of the Scorpius virus into focus. All of the previous characters are part of the plot. New information is revealed and new allies are brought into the story. A good romance and a nice addition to the world building. I look forward to the next book to see who will be the featured romance and where the plot will go from here.
Book Beginnings and The Friday 56 - January 27, 2017
I'm linking up with Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings and Freda's Voice for Page 56. Check out the links above for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Pick the closest book on your book stack and join the fun.
The Beginning:
"The killer waited patiently for the target to emerge from the cabin."
Page 56:
"Yeah, sure, no problem," Daniel Flint said. "Use your own judgment, Mr. Cutler. I just want answers."
From When All the Girls Have Gone by Jayne Ann Krantz. I was # 17 on the reserve list at the library and finally got the book this week. I am on page 60 so not much further than my quote on page 56. It is as always very interesting.
Captain Hawkins by Peter Alesso - Review Tour and Giveaway
Captain Hawkins
by H. Peter Alesso
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Sci-fi

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Jamie Hawkins was living on an obscure planet in the twenty third-century when on one fateful night--his life changed forever. His heroic effort to save the lives of innocent women and children, caught in the cross-fire of war, placed him squarely in the cross-hairs of avenging soldiers.
Hawkins was stunned when his rescue effort was seen as treachery. Unfairly convicted of treason by a corrupt judge, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor on an infamous penal colony.
Once in prison, his courage and perseverance won him the admiration and trust of his fellow convicts. While he was plotting his escape, an enemy attacked the planet--giving this daring warrior his chance. Together with his fellow prisoners, he launched a bold assault and high-jacked an enemy warship.
From then on, Captain Jamie Hawkins and his ship the Indefatigable fought against a corrupt government--only to discover a mysterious alien presence behind the war.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT

“Sir, I was working with the data techs trying to analyze the communication patterns of the enemy fleet,” said Joshua, licking his dry lips, excitedly. “And I’ve came across a very unusual signal.”

Hawkins gave him an encouraging nod.

“It was a burst of radio signals from deep space. I traced it to either a 4 billion-year-old star in a constellation 44.4 light years away, or to another star in that same constellation, but much farther away. That means that the radio waves have been travelling to us for at least forty-four point four years.”

Hawkins said, “Deep space radio signals have many plausible explanations, such as radio interference from planets, or rogue signals caused by local planet microwave devices.

“That’s true, Captain. It could be just the effect of a natural space object like a pulsating quasar, but it’s also possible . . . I think maybe . . . it could be a message from another civilization.”

Now smiling broadly, Hawkins said, “Given the unlikeness of that, why are you concerned?”

“Because it was not a one-off event,” said Joshua excitedly and then pausing to catch his breath. “I’ve recorded a half dozen repeating signals from the exact same source.”

Nodding, Hawkins said, “That’s a little more interesting, but there are explanations for that too.”

“But Captain, the implications could be mind-blowing. Imagine, what if it was an alien civilization, and they were far more advanced than us, and they were trying to make contact? After centuries of fruitlessly scanning the stars and finding no evidence that anyone else is out there, this could be . . .  could be . . .”

Joshua became paralyzed by his own imagination.

“Joshua, even if this signal were not natural, it might still be the product of one of Earth’s colonies—not aliens.”

“No sir, I’ve checked. There were no Earth colonies in the vicinity of the signal’s star cluster when we last had contact with Earth, fifty years ago,” said Joshua.

Joshua wanted to argue further, but couldn’t offer any additional proof for his cause.

Hawkins said, “I agree, we should continue to monitor this frequency, but for now, it’ll have to remain a mystery.”

It was only a few days later that Joshua returned to argue, “I’ve been working to decrypt the deep space signal using our AI computer with the help of a data tech.”

Hawkins was surprised, but also impressed with Joshua’s initiative.

“What does a deep space signal have to do with our enemy’s Top Secrets communication network?”

“Everything.”

“You’ll have to explain that.”

“Let me give you a metaphor for how I solved this puzzle, because it is a puzzle.”

“Go on.”

“Think of a portrait of a woman, say the Mona Lisa. Now consider a jigsaw puzzle of the Mona Lisa—a picture of a woman cut into a thousand irregularly sized pieces and spread out for someone to reassemble.”

“A kid’s game.”

“Yes, sir.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
REVIEW:
Captain Hawkins is a fast paced story.  The action goes nonstop and keeps the characters in a constant state of change.  This is space opera with enough actioned and adventure to keep anyone reading.  I never know what Hawkins was going to face next but I did know it would lead to another heart stopping situation.  A good pick for anyone who loves Science Fiction and Space Opera.
