Wedding?

Review

I have followed The Worthington from book #1, Three Weeks to Wed. With The Marquis and I the last eligible sister finds her HEA. That search ends in an unexpected way. Lady Charlotte Carpenter is kidnapped and then saved by Constantine, Marquis of Kenilworth. She is not saved from having to marry Constantine when she is seen with him after the rescue, something she just does not want to do. While this is a romance it also looks at human trafficking and the plight of women in a society that does not give them many options. I liked Constatine, he has some ideas that are wrong and admitted them. Charlotte is also an interesting character as she is very outspoken and independent. The two have to work to get to their HEA but that is what makes this such a very nice story.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 199 - The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly, Good Guys by Steven Brust

The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved Adam Grupper's voice performing The Lincoln Lawyer. It added to the story and kept me listening and not wanting to quit. I also liked the story. Mickey Haller is such a complex character. He defends the guilty and does not ever want an innocent client. Seem he has both innocent and guilty in his current case. This is riveting from the first and only continues to ramp up the tension as the story continues.

Good Guys by Steven Brust
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Magic is real but don't let anyone with no magic know. Good Guys has a complicated plot that is told from multiple points of view. That allows Brust to tell the story in very small bites and often like the players I was left in the dark about what was really going on. Turns out it is not at all what I though. It stated looking like a job to keep magic a secret and changes as the story progresses. I did enjoy the world building and back story that was revealed as the story progressed. I also liked the characters. This is a good one for anyone who likes to try to follow and solve a mystery before it is revealed.

Accelerating Universe by Nicola Claire

Ana Kereama and Captain John Jameson have a story to tell. They are leaving Earth behind and the voyage starts out almost being destroyed. Turns out that is the least of their problems. While Ana and John take turns as the point of view there is another character who is vitally important to the plot. Seems that Pavo the AI is another important character in the plot. It also seems that there are people on board who want to change how the journey ends and who is in control. This is a very well written and plotted story line that manages to mix a romance in with the danger and tension. The main characters are very well drawn and the side characters add interest and action to the story.   A very interesting story that should appeal to all Science Fiction Romance fans as well as just plain Science Fiction fans.


A Brush with Shadows by Anna Lee Huber
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sebastian Gage and Lady Kiera Darby are the main characters in this historical mystery series. They are married and are returning to Sebastian's home after he has been away for 15 years. Someone is missing and Sebastian and Kiere are asked to help. The house is not a happy place and it never was one for Sebastian. As we meet all the characters the past keeps coming up and the waters just seem to get muddier. I enjoyed meeting Sebastian and Kiera. They are two very strong characters who often clash but are still a very powerful team. This is book six in a six book series but I had no trouble keeping up with the story line. Having read A Brush with Shadow I do want to go back and pick up the first five books. The history between Sebastian and Kiera sounds very interesting and well worth a look.

If it can go wrong it will seems to be at the heart of this story. Politics transferred into the future and space was another underlying theme. This is fast paced but fairly predictable. The characters are fairly well drawn and fit the action. I could not help but draw a parallel to some of the things and people in the news today. I enjoyed the concept but really hated what happened to some of the characters.

Mission To Methonē by Les Johnson

Mission to Methone is the first book in a new series by Johnson. The theme is first contact. An alien ship is discovered and the plot moves from there. Earth is divided and each division has its own goals and they do not match. The characters fit the story and the story moves with some interesting twists and turns. What it does not do is come to any conclusions. We are left wondering if all will be well or all will be lost. The story leading up to that point is well written, the plot is action filled and the science is very believable.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews #196- Mary in Scandal by Anne Gracie, A Rogue of Her Own by Grace Burrowes

War does strange things to people and in Marry in Scandal Edward Galbraith is living proof. I really like Anne Gracie's books and the characters here are very busy keeping the story moving. Edward is frozen in time and keeps any feeling he has locked down. Lady Lily Rutherford finds herself on the brink of ruin through no fault of her own. Of course Edward moves in to save her. This is a interesting story line as Lily moves to save Edward just as he saved her. There are some side characters who are critical to the story and there is a glimpse of characters from Gracie's previous series. All in all a very good story.

A Rogue of Her Own by Grace Burrowes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Miss Charlotte Windham is the last Windham sister left unmarried and the pressure is on. Lucas Sherbourne is not at all who anyone expected but because her uncle found them kissing they wed. I loved how Lucas just kept feeling below Charlotte while Charlotte is the last persons to judge someone by their class. There is a underlying story from Charlotte's pass that adds some tension to the plot. Of course characters from past books help develop the story and add interest. The romance between Sherbourne and Charlotte is not the norm. Lucas was quick to realize what Charlotte really needed and it was not the norm. A nice end to the Windham's and their stories.

Rohan parked, cut the engine, and turned to me, his eyes hot. “Know what else I don’t like?”

I licked my lips, remembered that wasn’t an answer and shook my head.

Sliding my hand under his shirt, I skimmed my fingers along the ridges of his sculpted abs. He retracted his blades and I broke the kiss to draw his fingers into my mouth, my tongue swirling around each one in turn. Pinching his nipples with my other hand, I rubbed my bare thigh up his leg. His sigh rumbled over me.

A furious ache built to a throbbing pulse inside me.

The Life She Wants by Robyn Carr
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love Therese Plummer's voice in the books she narrates. It is really suited to stories like The Life She Wants. This is women's fiction featuring two friends who had a major falling out 15 years ago. Now events have brought them back where their orbits once again intersect. A story line with fairly stock characters and a familiar plot but still one most readers will enjoy. There were some very powerful scenes that struck a cord with me even as I knew what would happen.


The Burning Page by Genevieve Cogman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Irene is on probation for her actions in The Masked City. That does not keep her out of danger. Alberich is on the move again and it is up to Irene to stop him. This third book does a good job of mixing action to the appropriate character. Vale and Kai are part of the action. Other characters reappear and play an important part in the plot. Irene learns something that surprises her and will require further investigation on her part. The Burning Page is a interesting and exciting continuation of the story of the Invisible Library.

The luxury liner Supreme is off on its maiden voyage when the unthinkable happens. They are trapped in hyperspace and are not the first ones. With a passenger list that includes the very rich and the not so wealthy some lines are drawn with who can socialize with whom. Crew is there to serve, not socialize with passengers. Everything changes when the ship is trapped in a graveyard of ships many not even human. There are a lot of firsts here. First voyage, first time to see aliens ships, and first time a child born in hyperspace returns. There are voices, people going mad and crew working around the clock to get them out and safe. An tension filled story with an interesting ending. This is a stand alone but is in the same universe as several of Nuttall's previous books.

Daughter of Dragons by Jack Campbell

This is a interesting coming of age story with two teenage main characters. There is a girl whose mother is very famous (She is the main character in a previous series). A mother she thinks she cannot live up to. The other is a boy whose parents have told him he is worthless and he has not self confidence. When they have to go on the run both have life changing experiences. A very nicely put together story with danger, tension and the beginning of romance.

Battle Hymn by William C. Dietz

America is still trying to recover from the meteor strikes and the war between the North and South is ongoing. The final battles are looming and we get to see each in detail. Robin "Mac" Macintyre and Union president Samuel T. Sloan are working together and still facing their attraction to each other. This is full of battles and behind the scenes action. I read the first book but not the second and had no trouble knowing what was going on. Dietz does a really good job of working backstory into the story line and that kept me up to date on what was happening. A nice ending to a three book series.

The Last Wolf by Maria Vale
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Silver Nilsdottir is the last wolf in her pack (that is where the title comes from). She was the runt of her litter, no one though she would live and when she shifts she has a bad leg. In spite of all of that she is one of the strongest in her pack. Tiberius Leveraux is a shifter and a lone wolf who asked to join the pack. He needs someone to agree to help him and Silver agrees. The backstory starts with the prolog and there you learn the difference between Shifters and Werewolfs. Then the story moves to modern times. I enjoyed meeting Silver. Turns out Tiberius is not what he seems but he does recognize how strong and brave Silver is. As they interact Tiberius slowly changes and the two become a mated pair. A interesting take on the different types of werewolf and a good story line with some interesting changes as the story progresses. Seems that there is danger for the pack and our two main characters are important in keeping the pack together.  This is the first book in a new series.

An Accidental Death by Peter Grainger

Gildart Jackson does a great job on the voices in An Accidental Death. The characters have some expected characteristics. Smith is the older detective who has always done things his way. He is just coming back on duty (this is book one so I never really knew what he had done but he was demoted). He is saddled with a new young addition to the force and he is given a case where it looks on the surface like the death was an accident. Of course it was not and the plot unfolds. I loved the progression of the case and how Smith uses the different events to further the case while giving the young detective a good foundation to use in the future. A good start to a new British detective series.


Death of an Honest Man by M.C. Beaton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Hamish is back with another mystery to solve. This time he has other things to worry about. He misses his cat, is losing police assigned to help him right and left and Blair is really out to get him. This is another fun story that is light and easy to read. I do wonder if Hamish will ever find true love. Maybe M.C. Beaton is planning that. The book ends with Hamish getting a female police office as his new help. Just have to wait and see what happens next.  Oh and it turns out you can be too honest.

My room was on fire. Orange tongues licked the crumbling walls

and snaked across the burning floor toward my bed. Thick gray

smoke choked me. My ears throbbed with an insistent and

reverberating sound.

I couldn’t breathe.

I gasped for air. My palms felt sweaty, and my heart thrashed

against my rib cage, as if trying to escape my chest. I opened my eyes.

For a moment, I was in a bright and silent void – then I heard my

parents arguing in the kitchen.

It was a hot and sunny morning. I had been dreaming of hell

again, and the alarm clock was ringing.

I shut it off.

Ever since Brother Santiago had given in Religion class a week

ago a vivid and realistic description of hell as punishment for

masturbation and having sex with prostitutes, I’d had the same dream

over and over. Amid much commotion and speculation, Pacheco, the

frail student with a perennially runny nose who sat behind me in

class, fainted and had to be carted off to the school infirmary, pale

and limp like a noodle in won ton soup. Everyone in class knew

Pacheco was an assiduous masturbator – he bragged about it to other

students often enough – but his blackout generated great speculation

in the school about his frequent visits to brothels. I wondered what

kind of nightmares Pacheco was having.

On second thought, I really didn’t want to know. I had enough

with my own nightmares of hell.

I stretched lazily in bed. Today was a special day. It was my

birthday. I was fifteen years old.

A door slammed somewhere, and once more I was aware of my

parents’ angry voices in the kitchen. I likened their arguments to a

sort of word symphony, the sound of their voices harmonized so

well. My mother’s shrill, piercing sting was a nearly perfect

complement to my father’s placating hum.

Though I couldn’t hear them clearly, I guessed what they were

arguing about – money. Ever since Papa’s broom-making business

started going bad, it seemed money was all they ever talked about.
