While this is Wayfarers #4 you can start reading here as this series is very different. In fact all four books can stand alone. I loved the story line but did have a hard time with how to navigate the story. I kept skipping action and having to go back and find what I missed. And I did not want to miss any part of the story. This is about perceptions about people and what happens to those perceptions when you are thrown together. A good story for this time. We need to go past perceptions and find out who people really are.

Different

To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Interesting but different. LIke Chamber's trilogy this is very different. It is told from a single view point and is the story of explorers who change to fit the planet. While they are doing their job something happens on Earth and how the group reacts is the heart of the story. Different cast and different ending. Don't really know how I feel about the whole thing.

Lady Dunbridge is escaping from the role expected of her in England. Her escape is to New York in America. Her arrival is not what she expected. Seems the husband of her host has just been shot and it looks like his wife may be to blame. This has some interesting characters, some great historical data and a mystery with a lot of red herrings. A nice start to a new series and as a bonus there is a mystery character in the background.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

This third book in the Wayfarers trilogy is about people. Like the previous two books it takes place in an entirely new world, the world of the Exodus Fleet. Following several different characters, one an alien, we see the ships and the people. There are questions as events impact different characters. Each must answer the question; Why are we here? Should we go or stay? I loved the book and the ending even though it left me in tears. Great job showing how we can work together as the world we live in changes.

Rachel Dulude does a great job fitting her voice to the people and emotions.

This was an interesting book. It is very strong on character development, backstory, and world building. What it was not strong on was plot. I knew something bad was going to happen when the crew of the Wayfarer took a new job in a dangerous part of space. However that was just a backdrop to learning about the crew and their history. When the danger finally happened it was just a small part of the story line. I started reading this one several times and did not get very far. The audio book works much better and I ended up giving the book 5 stars and voting for it to get the Hugo.

This was not at all what I expected. I listened to this right after finishing A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and expected to meet the crew of the Wayfarer again. What I did meet was the Wayfarer's former AI, now called Sidra, and Pepper a side character from the first book. Again this was strong on character development, world building and back story. The book is divided between Pepper and her story and the AI, Sidra, and her struggle to adjust to life in a body instead of a ship. It took a while for the story to catch me but when it did I had trouble making myself stop listening. An interesting take on a series. I wonder what book three will be and if I will meet the Wayfarer crew again.

Skin Deep by Brandon Sanderson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Stephen Leeds, AKA “Legion,” is an unusual character. He has so many aspects he can fill an entire book without any help. His aspects are fully formed characters who travel with him and help solve mysteries. They are the most unusual part of the book. It is well know that he has imaginary helpers that travel with him. He goes as far as ordering them food in a restaurant and making sure that they have a seat at the table. This is a fun read as Leeds deals with both real and imaginary characters to solve the mystery of the missing body.

From The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. I have read several good reviews on this so checked it out at the library on my last trip.
