The SFR Brigade Mid-Summer Blog Hop just ended and as it did SFR Brigade published their first book of short stories titled Tales from the SFR Brigade.  This is a free ebook.  Click on the link above to get your copy.  I downloaded and read immediately and loved every story.

World building:  These are short stories so there is not a lot of time to world build.  In spite of that each author manages to include just the right amount of information about the world their readers need.  All are stand alone with the exception of Linnea Sinclair’s story.  The back-story is in Games of Command

Characters: There are some well drawn characters in each story. After meeting them in the short stories I would love to see them in full-length books or novellas.

Writing:  These are some exceptionally well-written short stories with short but well developed plots.  After finishing the entire volume I was ready to go back and re-read every story again.

I do have one suggestion.  I would have liked a clickable
Table of Contents.  As I read I bookmarked the start of each story so I could easily find them again.

This was a great idea and I hope that there will be future volumes.  There was a wealth of writing talent in Tales from the SFR Brigade.  I look forward to seeing more from each author.

Tales from the SFR Brigade is an ebook.  Remember it is free so be sure to download and read.

A Spy To Die For (Assassins Guild #2) by Kris DeLake

A Spy To Die For (Assassins Guild, #2)Science Fiction Romance

From Goodreads:

"When Spy Meets Spy
Agent: Skylight
Profile: Seasoned Assassin Guild Super-Sleuth. Talented enough that she can write her own rules.
Budget: Unlimited.

Agent: Jack

Profile: Main investigator for the loosely federated Rover Assassins. Guided by a strict moral code, fierce loyalty, and a sense of duty.

More Than Sparks Will Fly

On opposite sides of a high-stakes game, lust lures two spies together in a passionate encounter. Little do they know that the heat of the moment would bind them, turning their worlds upside down. Hunted by deadly assassins, can the pair and their love withstand the onslaught?"

The timeline in A Spy To Die For is the same as the timeline in Assassins In Love.  Unlike Misha and Rikki who are assassins, Sky and Jack are spies, one for the Assassins Guild and one for the Rover Assassins.

Characters:  Sky and Jack are both great characters.  Both have secrets, both have trouble trusting and both usually work independently.  It is fun to see what happens when they have to work together to survive.

Plot:  I thought the plot here was a little weak.  The book is more romance centered than plot centered.  This is more of a small splinter off of the plot in Assassins In Love but it is still a fun read.

A Spy To Die For is a fun light read.  It is a good place to get your SFR (Science Fiction Romance) fix so pick it up.  Even though it is book 2 in the Assassins Guild series it can stand-alone but pick up Assassins in Love for a double SFR fix.

The Human Division by John Scalzi

Science Fiction

What Goodreads Says:

"Following the events of The Last Colony, John Scalzi tells the story of the fight to maintain the unity of the human race.

The people of Earth now know that the human Colonial Union has kept them ignorant of the dangerous universe around them. For generations the CU had defended humanity against hostile aliens, deliberately keeping Earth an ignorant backwater and a source of military recruits. Now the CU’s secrets are known to all. Other alien races have come on the scene and formed a new alliance—an alliance against the Colonial Union. And they’ve invited the people of Earth to join them. For a shaken and betrayed Earth, the choice isn't obvious or easy.

Against such possibilities, managing the survival of the Colonial Union won’t be easy, either. It will take diplomatic finesse, political cunning…and a brilliant “B Team,” centered on the resourceful Lieutenant Harry Wilson, that can be deployed to deal with the unpredictable and unexpected things the universe throws at you when you’re struggling to preserve the unity of the human race.

Being published online from January to April 2013 as a three-month digital serial, The Human Division will appear as a full-length novel of the Old Man’s War universe, plus—for the first time in print—the first tale of Lieutenant Harry Wilson, and a coda that wasn’t part of the digital serialization."

The Human Division is an extension of the Old Man’s War universe.  Set after John Perry lets Earth know how the Colonial Union had used and kept the planet in the dark, this is a series of stories about on one group of diplomats working for the survival of the CU and humans in general.

There are some great characters in The Human Division.  Harry Wilson, Hart Schmidt and Ambassador Abumwe seem to be a mismatched team.  Harry is a real smart mouth, Hart just seems to be going with the flow and Abumwe does not like anyone.  The interaction between them leads to a lot of laught out loud moments.  They are the “B” team who manages to make things work in spite of the odds. Those three are from the CU.  Dani Lowen is from Earth and often finds herself working with the team.

Even though each story is separate they all come together to make a whole.  You get to know all of the characters, the history and the politics as the stories progress.  There is a cliffhanger ending but don’t despair.  Book two is in the works and is scheduled for release. The Human Division is a great addition to the series and I look forward to the next book.

MindLink by Kat Cantrell

Science Fiction Romance

What Goodreads Says:

"Determined to revitalize her imploding career, blacklisted movie star Ashley V takes on her biggest role yet: posing as one of ten scientists invited by aliens to a universal summit. But when the aliens seize, strip and implant the entire delegation to extract their knowledge, she is quickly found out and sent to a cell to await recycling.

The alien research director designated ZXQ-One devised a plan to let the humans volunteer their best and brightest in a gamble to solve his people’s energy crisis. But he fails to find anything useful and winds up imprisoned alongside the fiery human woman who refuses to give up, and who insists on calling him Sam.

After an accidental link between their implants lets them share their thoughts, they find themselves drawn to each other. Sam will have to trust in her human compassion and forgiveness for his role in her capture, and Ashley will have to trust him with her deepest secrets if they are to have any chance at survival. "

MindLink has an interesting start and one that caught my attention right away.  Who would have thought to send an actress masquerading as a scientist to meet an alien species?  Of course she is caught, not because she is a bad actress but because the role was not what anyone thought.  With that novel beginning the story moves along a very unique path.  Sam or ZXQ-One goes from being the villain to being the hero.  Ashley becomes a star in a very different way.

I like the way the plot developed.  There is no love at first site for Ashley and Sam.  They start as enemies, progress to barely willing to speak, have to work together to escape and then there is the mind link.  Even that does not lead straight to love.  In fact it complicates things even further.  Who wants an alien knowing what you are thinking?  But who is the alien and who is the human?

Both Sam and Ashley did a lot of changing and growing as the story progressed.  Sam had spent his life in a very structured society.  His change came as he realized that what he had always believed was no longer true.  Ashley had to forgive herself for the thing she did in the past.  The story worked because both characters grew and changed.

I enjoyed reading MindLink.  It is a good addition to SFR and a good book to recommend during the SFR Brigade Mid-Summer Blog Hop.

Games of Command by Linnea Sinclair

Games of Command is one of the books offered as part of the first prize in the SFR Second Annual Mid-Summer Blog Hop.  This is a previous post but I though it would be appropriate to repeat during the hop.  There are still 2 days and some hours left in the hop.  To get your entries for the prizes follow this line:  http://mixedbookbag.blogspot.com/2013/06/science-fiction-romance-brigade-second.html

Here is what Goodreads Says:

"The universe isn’t what it used to be. With the new Alliance between the Triad and the United Coalition, Captain Tasha “Sass” Sebastian finds herself serving under her former nemesis, biocybe Admiral Branden Kel-Paten–and doing her best to hide a deadly past. But when an injured mercenary winds up in their ship’s sick bay–and in the hands of her best friend, Dr. Eden Fynn–Sass’s efforts may be wasted.

Wanted rebel Jace Serafino has information that could expose all of Sass’s secrets, tear the fragile Alliance apart–and end Sass’s career if Kel-Paten discovers them. But the biocybe has something to hide as well, something once thought impossible for his kind to possess: feelings . . . for Sass. Soon it’s clear that their prisoner could bring down everything they once believed was worth dying for–and everything they now have to live for."

And here is my original post:

Games of Command published by Bantam Spectra in 2007 is among my favorite books. Bantam Spectra contracted with Linnea Sinclair to republish her books originally written for a small press that went out of business. Finders KeepersGabriel’s GhostAccidental Goddess and Games of Command were all part of that contract. The original story line was a two-part book. Only the first book was published. Bantam did not want a series and had Linnea rewrite the story as one book. I have read Command Performance, the first book in the series, and I found Games of Command to be a much tighter better-written book.

I call this a space opera romance. The book is filled with plot twists and action. While there are two different romances in the book the main characters are Captain Tasha Sebastian and Admiral Brandon Kel-Paten. The two had been enemies for years. When a new threat appeared on the scene the old saying “The enemy of my enemy is my friend” came into play and the two are now part of the new Alliance. Tasha is posted to Admiral Kel-Paten’s ship as part of the peace treaty. Tasha is the opposite of Kel-Paten and thinks that he hates her. He is a biocybe and as far as he knows one of a kind. Created to be the ultimate warrior he is part machine and part human programmed feel no emotion but anger. He is a great at his job, follows all the rules, but is ill at ease in other situations. Tasha thrives in situations that are outside the box. The two first met 12 years before when the then Captain Kel-Paten boarded the ship Tasha was on to commandeer its cargo. Tasha outwitted him and he left empty handed. Tasha did not fear him and managed to do what few other could. Without anyone being aware Kel-Paten had managed to overpower his emotion inhibitors and he fell in love with Tasha. For the next 12 years wrote her love letters that would only be sent when he died. Now he finally has her on his ship. And so the story is set.  They capture a rebel, nothing goes as planned. Tasha learns of Kel-Paten feeling when she breaks into his files. It is nonstop action from there on.

If you like Science Fiction Romance I predict that Games of Command will land on your favorites shelf.

Science Fiction Romance Brigade Second Mid-Summer Blog Hop - My Favorite Aliens, the T'carais or Clutch Turtles

I love the Liaden Universe books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. The first book in the series (Agent of Change) introduces the T'carais or Clutch Turtles.  Here is how Edger and the turtles are introduced:

"He was regal, as befitted a T'carais and a being more than nine hundred Standard Years old, though among his race he was known for his occasional hasty action.  On visas he was thus: Twelfth Shell Fifth Hatched Knife Clan of Middle River's Sparing Spawn of Farmer Greentrees of the Spear-makers Den, The Edger."

Edger is the brother of Van Con yos'Phelium and friend of Miri Robertson the two main character in Agent of Change.  Edger is also very large.

I have two copies of Agent of Change to give away.  If you would like to know more about Van Con, Miri and Edger fill in the Rafflecopter giveaway form below. I will choose two winners and notify you on June 26th if you are one of the winners.  This prize is for my blog only.

A Woman Entangled (Blackshear Family #3) by Cecilia Grant

Historical Romance

From Goodreads:

"An ambitious beauty seeking a spot among the elite is thwarted by a most disruptive gentleman in Cecilia Grant’s witty, elegant, and exquisitely sensual novel.

Kate Westbrook has dreams far bigger than romance. Love won’t get her into London’s most consequential parties, nor prevent her sisters from being snubbed and looked down upon—all because their besotted father unadvisedly married an actress. But a noble husband for Kate would deliver a future most suited to the granddaughter of an earl. Armed with ingenuity, breathtaking beauty, and the help of an idle aunt with connections, Kate is poised to make her dreams come true. Unfortunately, a familiar face—albeit a maddeningly handsome one—appears bent on upsetting her scheme.

Implored by Kate’s worried father to fend off the rogues eager to exploit his daughter’s charms, Nick Blackshear has set aside the torch he’s carried for Kate in order to do right by his friend. Anyway, she made quite clear that his feelings were not returned—though policing her won’t abate Nick’s desire. Reckless passion leads to love’s awakening, but time is running out. Kate must see for herself that the charms of high society are nothing compared to the infinite sweet pleasures demanded by the heart."

A Woman Entangled tells the story of Nick Blackshear the brother of Martha from A Lady Awakened and Will of AGentleman Undone.  Both make an appearance in A Woman Entangled.  (Follow the links to read my reviews of the first two books.)

Nick is a barrister and he has lost many of his clients because of the scandal that surrounded his brother Will’s marriage.  The one place he is always welcome is at the Westbrook’s where scandal is an old friend.  Mrs. Westbrook was an actress before her marriage and the Mr. Westbrook’s family cut them out of their lives when they married.  The oldest daughter Kate wants to make them socially acceptable again and A barrister who has scandal in his family just will not do.
It was fun to watch Nick and Kate interact.  They have become friends and even though Nick is in love with Kate he does not let it show.  Kate thinks love should come at first sight and does not realize that it can grow from friendship.  Their journey is more low key than many romances.  Family and scandal play a big part in the story.

A Woman Entangled has a different flavor from the previous two stories.  There was less tension and more emphasis on family and forgiveness.  It was an enjoyable read but for me not as gripping as the two previous books.  Even so the Blackshear series is one that I will keep reading.  I do like the fact that each book is different and each story matches the characters it features.  Once again Grant's characters and story are unlike other romance books set in this time period.  Grant's writing  continues to occupy a unique place in historical fiction.

Bantam published A Woman Entangled by Cecilia Grant in 2013.

I received an ARC of A Woman Entangled from Netgalley.

Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh

Paranormal Romance

From Goodreads:

"Step into New York Times bestseller Nalini Singh’s explosive and shockingly passionate Psy-Changeling world…

A dangerous, volatile rebel, hands stained blood red.
A woman whose very existence has been erased.
A love story so dark, it may shatter the world itself.
A deadly price that must be paid.
The day of reckoning is here.

From “the alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist) comes the most highly anticipated novel of her career—one that blurs the line between madness and genius, between subjugation and liberation, between the living and the dead."

I just finished Heart of Obsidian. I found it a difficult book to read and an even more difficult to review.  The story is very dark.  One of the characters is holding on to his control for most of the story.  There is danger, excitement, suspense, and romance.  The romance is the only thing holding the main character in check.  Love in this story truly saves.  There are a lot of lines crossed and the Psy have to change or disappear.  This is a excellent addition to the Psy-Changeling series.   I would not recommend this as a stand alone book.  Start at the beginning of the series for the most enjoyment.

Berkley Sensation published Heartof Obsidian by Nalini Singh in 2013.

Teaser Tuesdays, June 18, 2013

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
I haven't been here for a few months but plan to be back most weeks from now on.
My teaser is from Her Sky Cowboy by Beth Ciotta.  This is the first book in The Glorious Victorious Darcys.  Book two, His Clockwork Canary, came out this month.
"Stay," Tucker commanded. Next thing she knew he'd rounded the bed once again.  He took her hands, squeezed, "Look at me, darling."
"The endearment was inappropriate, although, at this moment, oddly comforting."  page 49.
Her Sky Cowboy is Steampunk with some time travel mixed in and is set in the Victorian Age.  Here is what Goodreads says:
"Amelia Darcy has no interest in marrying well. Her heart belongs to the sky and the dirigibles of brass and steel that swoop over Victorian England. But when her father, an eccentric inventor, dies, the Darcy siblings are left with scrap metal—and not a penny to their names. Their only hope to save the family reputation and fortune is to embark on a quest to discover an invention of historical importance in honor of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

Armed with only her father's stories of a forgotten da Vinci workshop, a mechanically enhanced falcon, and an Italian cook, Amelia takes flight for Florence, Italy. But her quest is altered when her kitecycle crashes into the airship of ex-Air Marshal—and scandalous dime novel hero—Tucker Gentry.

Tuck agrees to escort Amelia to her destination, but the two are challenged by political unrest, a devious sky pirate, and their own sizzling attraction. Soon the pair is dragged into an international conspiracy that could change the course of history…again."

Musing Mondays, June 17, 2013

MusingMondays5Musing Mondays (http://shouldbereading.wordpress.com/) asks you to muse about one of the following each week…
• Describe one of your reading habits. •
Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!
 • Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.
•Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
 • Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books — let’s hear it, then!

I finished two books from two different series this week.  The first was Can’t Stop Believing (A Harmony Novel) by Jodi Thomas.  The second was Agave Kiss (A Corine Solomon Novel) by Ann Aguirre.  The two are very different.

Can’t Stop Believing is a feel good novel about love and second chances.  Cord McDowell and Nevada Britain are the main characters in is novel but there are several other story lines that also come to a conclusion.  And as always there is the beginning of another secondary story line for a future story.  Look for two people who belong together and one HEA, a sad ending to one story line that has been in several books, and an all around feel good story. This is part of a series but each book can stand-alone.  I look forward to each book in the series and have yet to be disappointed

Agave Kiss is the last book in the Corine Solomon series. Unlike the Harmony books this series has not held up as well.  I finished the book because I have read all the previous books in the series.  This is not a stand-alone book.  You need to read each of the books in order.  I was a little disappointed in the book.  It tied up a lot of lose ends and there was a HEA for Corine and Chance.  It was a very busy books with a lot of story lines that came together.  I"m glad I finished the book but I have to admit I had to make myself continue several times before the end.

What the Duke Desires (The Duke’s Men #1) by Sabrina Jeffries

-->
What the Duke Desires (The Duke's Men, #1)Historical Romance

From Goodreads:

"Maximilian Cale, the Duke of Lyons, accepted long ago that his kidnapped brother was dead. When a cryptic note from investigator Tristan Bonnaud claims otherwise, Max seeks out Tristan’s sister, Lisette—and is infuriated to learn that Tristan has also mysteriously vanished. Have the siblings perpetrated an elaborate hoax? Or is the fiercely protective beauty as innocent as she claims them to be?
Fearful that the powerful Duke will destroy Tristan’s career in his zeal for the truth, the clever Lisette convinces Max to accompany her to Paris in a joint search for their loved ones. But their journey takes a seductive twist when they pose as an ordinary husband and wife—not an English Duke with a tarnished family name and the illegitimate daughter of a viscount—and discover an exhilarating passion free from the damning secrets of the past. With the line between danger and desire enticingly blurred, they discover that some mysteries, like those of the heart, are answered tenfold in the bliss of a true and trusting love."

What the Duke Desires is the first book in a new series and has a full cast of characters.   Lisette and Max are the main characters in What the Duke Desires.  Tristan is Lisette’s brother and Dom is Lisette’s half-brother and both play an important part in the story.  Victor is a cousin that Max discovers as the story unfolds.  He is Max’s only living relative.  Then there is George, another half-brother.  George is not a nice person and I suspect that he will show up in future books. I saw hooks for several more books in The Duke’s Men series.

This is a fast paced romance filled with tension and danger.  I was kept guessing until end.  The writing is great, the story is interesting and the characters are well developed.  What the Duke Desires is a great start to a new series.

I received an ARC of What the Duke Desires from Edelweiss.  What the Duke Desires will be released on June 18th.  Pre-order so you can start reading as soon as it comes out.

Pocket Books is the publisher of What the Duke Desires by Sabrina Jeffries.
