The Beginning:

By London standards, it was a dark and stormy night"

Page 56:

"Actually it was the queen who asked me to come and stay here to look after Princess Marina until her marriage."

From Malice at the Place (A Royal Spyness Mystery) by Rhys Bowen.

The Beginning:

"Daniel Tate clenched his teeth and looked away just as the needle pierced a vein in his arm,"

Page 56/57:

"He felt light-headed and suddenly exhaustion dissolved into an unusual calm. He felt himself slipping into water, letting go of his body."

From Silent Creed by Alex Kava. This is an ARC I got from Amazon Vine and will be released at the end of July. I read the first book in the series and really liked it. The feature character trains rescue dogs and I think the dogs steal the story.

The Beginning: Sweat slid down Amanda's back. Her hair stuck to her forehead."

Page 56:

"They're not just any insect bite." He looked over at O'Dell and waited for her eyes. "They're fire ants. And nobody just falls into a gigantic mound of fire ants and lies there."

From Breaking Creed by Alex Kava. This is a mystery I got from Amazon Vine. It appears to be book one in a new series. If so it is off to a good start.
