What Else I Read in February 2015

Books:

The Viscount Who Lived Down the Lane by Elizabeth Boyle - Once again Boyle has come up with a really fun romance.  Louisa Tempest fits her name.  At least where Viscount Wakefield is concerned.  He has come home from the war and retired to his house to drink and sleep.  All of that changes when Hannibal, Louisa's cat runs into the wrong house, the one belonging to Viscount Wakefield.  I love Hannibal.  He is such a cat.  From there it is a really fun tempest leading to a great HEA.  Louisa has a twin so we will see more of these great characters in the next book.

Chosen by Nina Croft - Chosen is the first in a series and as it ended I was reminded of the old time serials where the end was a cliff hanger.  You are left with a what happens next feeling.  Since this is short (only 75 pages) it does not take you long to get  to that point.  What Croft did in 75 pages was establish the two main characters, introduce side characters,  fill in part of the back story, and do the world building.  I found it a very satisfying read and will be looking for the next installment.

Cowboy Heaven by Cheryl Brooks - I liked the characters in Cowboy Heaven. All of the cowboys were really hot and fun. Angela McClure has some really great fantasies and then gets to live some of them out. This is erotica so if you don't like a lot of sex don't pick this up. What starts out as just a need for love and sex story changes as the book progresses. It seems someone is targeting anyone who shows an interest in Angela. It was not that hard to guess who but it was hard to know why. A nice fun read. At the end one of the cowboys and Angela are a couple. I wonder if the next books in the series will feature each of the others.

Never Too Late by Robyn Carr - This is one of her early books.  I saw it at the library and picked it up out of curiosity.  While it is a good story the writing is not up to her later standards.  Still enjoyable for a quick short read.

The Deputy’s Redemption by Delores Fosses - This is book five in the Sweetwater Ranch Series.  I think we are finally getting who did the killing 20 years ago.  At least a little closer.

Hold Me by Susan Mallery - This is Fool's Gold number 16.  It features two new characters so I guess even though Mallery has started a new series Fool's Gold will continue.  Even though the ending is predictable I still like the books and will keep reading.

Cowboy Heaven by Cheryl Brooks - I love Brooks' SciFi series so though I would give this one a try.  It is book one in her new series.

Wildcat is book 9 in the Cat Star Chronicles and the story is still going strong.  Here is the Goodreads summary:

I loved both of the main characters in Wildcat.  Sara Shield is so independent and does not think she needs a man, especially one like Jerden.  Jerden, on the other hand, is thought to be dangerous and a little insane.  Living like a hermit he does not think he will ever respond to any woman again.  When Sara shows no reaction to him as a man it really catches his attention  The more they are together the bigger their attraction to each other grown.

This is a good story line.  The opening scene with Jerden riding Sara’s missing stallion, Danuban, bareback and nude is priceless.  The addition of the black leopard running at Jerden’s side makes it perfect. The way Sara just ignores the lack of dress and the leopard gives a good insight into her character.  I just knew with that beginning that I was going to love the story.

Nathan Wolmack makes a good bad guy.  It takes awhile to find out what he wants from Sara but I knew from the beginning he was up to no good.

Most of the characters from the previous books make an appearance in Wildcat.  It was great to see Jack and Cat again.  I loved how the beginning of the first book was worked into the story.  It was great to also see all the rest of them again.  I think I saw the star of the next book.  Look and see if you agree that there is a new main character making an appearance.

On a recent trip to another blog there was a question about what male character I would like to see come to life.  My Answer:  Any one of the Zethithian’s in Cheryl’s books but preferably one I could call my own.

Wildcat is another book that will not be released until February of 2013.  Put Wildcat on your wish list or go ahead and pre-order.  I received Wildcat as an ARC from Netgalley.

Science Fiction Romance

I have followed The Cat Star Chronicles from the beginning and was thrilled to see new offering in the series.  Stud was released in February and is a great addition to the series.

Just a quick background for any who have not read the series.  Zetithian males are the greatest lovers in the universe.  A jealous man destroyed the home planet of the Zetithians along with most of the Zetithian race.  A few survived but have been hunted and ran the risk of being killed if found.  That changed when the man guilty of the destruction was found and killed.  Zetithian are no longer hunted and killed.

I met Tarq in Virgin, book seven in the series.  He thinks the only thing he is good for is producing new Zetithians and he in traveling the universe offering his services to any woman who will bear his children.  He does not feel he is worthy of love so he is doing the only thing he thinks he can do to help his people.  I wondered how Cheryl was going to handle his story because he is truly deserves the title Stud.

Everything changes for Tarq when he walks into a restaurant owned by Lucinda Force’s father.  The minute he smells Lucinda (yes I said smells) his world changes.  Lucinda had no hope of romance.  Her family does not treat her well.  She does all the work and gets none of the credit.  When Tarq arrives she takes the chance for one night of romance, a night that will give her children of her own.  Her plan is to leave and start a life of her own.

Both Tarq and Lucinda want more than one night but both are afraid to speak what is in their heart. Lucinda because she does not think anyone could love her and Tarq because his only useful skill is in bed.  There is conflict and danger to make the changes needed for both to accept love.

I think Tarq’s story is one of my favorites of the series.  His insecurities come for a learning disability that makes reading a problem.  It gives a nice touch to the story and a reason for him to feel less than others.

Virgin, The Cat Star Chronicles by Cheryl Brooks

Science Fiction Romance

I was surprised when I read that there was another book in the Cat Star Chronicles.  At the end of Hero, the sixth book, I thought the series was at an end but as Cheryl says in Virgin, her publisher said that cats have nine lives and her series should have just as many.  If I had looked closer I would have realized that the following message Jack got in Hero's Epilogue was  setting the stage for future books.

"A woman by the name of Amelyana Grekkor has arrived at Terra Minor in a starship filled with over a hundred Zetithian refugees.  They have been in space for twenty-five years and are requesting permission to land."

Dax was raised on that ship.  He is now a wealthy Starship pilot with his own ship.  When he accepts a passenger he charges only what they can afford to pay.  Ava Karon needs to get away from an abusive man and Dax agrees to take her to her home planet.  Because Dax has never met a woman he wants he is still a virgin. Dax is attracted to Ava but he does not know how to let her know.     Women usually throw themselves at him but Ava does not.  Dax needs help.  Throw in danger, a friend who may or may not help Dax with Ava, and you have a great adventure.

Virgin is a great addition to the Cat Star series.  Again Cheryl Brooks has come up with great hero and a woman who is his match.  With over one hundred Zetithian refugees still out there nine lives may not be enough for this series.

Virgin can be read as a stand-alone but for the most fun start at the beginning with Slave and read in the following order; Warrior, Outcast, Rogue, Fugitive, and Hero.
