A past Roarke would rather forget arrives Eve's crime scene and a whole new danger unravels. Both Eve and Roarke find that they have friends who will stand with them through thick and thin, A really riveting story line that goes from the present in New York to the past in Ireland. Good addition to the series.

Eve has a new case, in fact two new cases. They appear to be from the same person but why these two who do not have a connection. Great new case. Roarke is more a side character in this one. Eve and team do most of the work with just a little help from the civilivan consultant. One of the better books in the series.

Nick Cappuano and Samantha Holland are still on a roller coaster. Did the President know what his son was doing when he attacked Nick and Sam? Will Nick become President? Who is the killer and why is he targeting random victims. All of this and more is part of the tension filled story line in the 12th book of the series. A good addition to the series.

Eve Dallas gets home early on evening only to get a call that sends her back to work with an unusual murder. This time someone is trying to make fiction both real and the plot much better. Eve and Roarke are caught up in trying to find the next victim while enjoying some alone time. I never pass up a new book in this series. The mystery is always interesting and the interaction between the characters keeps everything moving at a fast pace. Nice addition to the series.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 156 - Secrets in Death by J.D. Robb, Artemis by Andy Weir, Places in the Darkness by Christopher Brookmyre

Secrets in Death by J.D. Robb

Eve is someplace she did not want to be when Larinda Mars, someone she really did not like, was murdered. Sometimes the In Death book get a little stale but that was not true with this one. Rourke is once again helping with the case. There is more of a fairly new character involved and the mystery is truly a mystery. It was fun watching Eve unravel the background of Mars as she worked toward finding the killer. There were several fun lines in the book. My favorite was someone telling Eve she was wearing $6000 (or was it $3000 boots) boots and her first denying and then wondering if it was true. Good addition to the series.


Artemis by Andy Weir

This is a locked room mystery. Artemis is the one and only city on the moon and bad things are happening. Jazz makes money on the side smuggling but when she is offered a very large sum to sabotage a industry she just cannot refuse. Jazz is a interesting character. She loves her city but skates on just the edge of the law. There are people that keep telling her that she is not living up to her potential. She is very smart and her definition of living up to her potential is different from others. However, this time she goes too far and causes a very big disaster. In the end she makes a big save and as the book ends she shows that she is still true to herself.

Places in the Darkness by Christopher Brookmyre

Nikki "Fix" Freeman and Alice Blake seem to be very different. Alice is very uptight and law-abiding while Nikki should be but is anything but. Both start as opponents but end up having to work together to solve a series of murders. Brookmyre has built a very interesting and complex world that is home to a large cast of characters. Ciudad de Cielo--The City in the Sky is a space station that should be a example as humans head to the stars but human failing have followed them into space. The backstory starts to come out as the story starts it just takes a while to see what has happened in the past and how it is changing the present. The pace of the story is slow at first as the character development, world building and backstory develop. Then it takes off and things start speeding up. An interesting mystery filled with surprises as Nikki and Alice find out who is responsible for the murders. Biggest surprise - Nikki and Alice are more alike than they thought.

New York to Dallas is the latest in the Eve Dallas Series and answers some long ignored questions. Isaac McQueen, The Collector, has escaped from Rikers. He was Eve’s first major arrest and he means to pay her back for the 12 years he has spent in prison. He first lures Eve to his old apartment in New York and then to Dallas. Eve would like to forget her past in Dallas but this trip brings it back into focus.

I have been looking for this story a long time. We got the story of Roarke’s past and his family in a past book and with every new book after that I looked for the rest of Eve’s story. New York to Dallas finally fills in that gap.

New York to Dallas is part of a large series. It can stand-alone but it would be best if you have read the series from the first.

I don’t think I have missed reading any of the 39 books in this series.  Some have been favorites and some not so favorite but through it all I have stuck with Dallas and Roarke.  The ones that are my favorites have one thing in common.  They all feature new growth for Dallas and Roarke.  Festive in Death does that.  Written around the big Christmas party at Roarke’s mansion Eve has to let go and own her place by Roarke’s side.  I loved how she managed the set up for the party while still working her case.  With a house full of characters from previous books she realizes how may friends she now has and how much her life has changed for the better.

There is also a lot of interaction between Eve and Roarke that highlights how right for each other they are.  The mystery kept playing sometimes in the background and sometimes in the forefront.  I thought Eve was on the wrong track about the killer.  It was fun to realize I was right and that it took her time to see who was really guilty.

Festive in Death is a nice addition to the series and a Christmas story to boot.

I have been reading the In Death Series from the beginning.  By the time you get to #38 in a series there is a strong probability that some will be very good and some just average.  While that has been true with this series Concealed in Death is the best I have read in a while. 

The mystery is just that.  I knew who was guilty as soon as Eve did but it took her awhile and I enjoyed going on the journey with her.  There were some great scenes in the book that were related to the mystery but involved Eve and many of the main characters.  Each highlighted the way Eve has changed as the books progress.  I loved the one where Mira’s husband Dennis gave Eve a hat and gloves. 

In Death is a fun series and each book can be read as a stand-alone but reading the entire series in order is a lot more fun.  I am looking forward to the next book and seeing more of Eve and Roarke.

I just discovered Library 2 Go, Downloadable Media, at my local library. I like the In Death series and had seen Big Jack in the bookstore. When I found it on Library 2 Go I checked it out. Books from Library 2 Go can be downloaded to your computer and are available for two weeks. Big Jack is a story that was previously published in the anthology Remember When. It is also a sequel to Hot Rocks, a Nora Roberts novel set in the present.

On the In Death time line Big Jack takes place shortly after Roarke learns the truth about his Mother. Peabody has just been promoted to Detective and this is her first case working with Eve in her new position.

Samantha Gannon has written a book about a diamond robbery that took place in 2003. One fourth of the diamonds were never recovered. When she arrives home from a two-week book tour she finds her apartment trashed and her house sitter murdered. Eve draws the case. You can read the story of the diamond robbery in Hot Rocks. The final solution to the robbery fits well as a side story in the In Death series.

Check to see if your library has a subscription to Library 2 Go. As long as you do not mind reading on a computer it is a good way to get books without every leaving home.

Salvation in Death by J.D. Robb

Futuristic Suspense

I just finished Salvation in Death published by Putnam and written by J. D. Robb. For those who do not know J. D. Robb is a pen name for Nora Roberts. This is the 28th book in the in Death series. If you have never read this series I recommend that you start with book one. Most libraries have this series and all but Salvation are available in paperback.

While performing the sacraments at a funeral mass Father Flores drinks the wine from the Chalice and dies of poison. Homicide cop Eve Dallas draws the case. It turns out the priest is not Father Flores and is not even a priest. All of these events happen in the first few pages of the book. The suspense is drawn out, red herrings are placed, and a fast pace is kept up throughout the book. As the story plays out many of the previous character make an appearance and of course no story will be complete without Roarke, Eve’s sexy billionaire husband. Read Salvation in Death. You will not be disappointed.
