Interesting Characters

Miss Delectable (Mischief in Mayfair #1)Miss Delectable by Grace Burrowes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Two great characters who are not top of the ton. Miss Ann Pearson and Sir Orion Goddard are upper class but not near the top. Ann works as a cook and is really a chef but being a woman she is not allowed that title. Orion is the subject of nasty suspicions The two are a great match. Add the other characters and the other troubles and you have a hard to put down plot. Loved the action and the resulting HEA.

Surprise A Short and Sweet Book Review

Forever and a Duke (Rogues to Riches, #3)Forever and a Duke by Grace Burrowes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Eleanora Hatfield has secrets in her past. Wrexham, Duke of Elsmore, has more family to take care of than he wants. He also has someone stealing from him. Enter Eleanora who understands figures and is tasked to help him find out where the money is going. The two should have nothing in common but of course the more time they spend together the more the attraction. This has it all. Some mystery, interesting side characters, romance and tension all wrapped up in a great story. Nice addition to the Rogues to Riches series.

Short and Sweet Book # 324 - A Stone Creek Christmas by Linda Lael Miller, Patience fo Christmas by Grace Burrowes

A Stone Creek Christmas A Cowboy's Wish Upon a Star: An AnthologyA Stone Creek Christmas A Cowboy's Wish Upon a Star: An Anthology by Linda Lael Miller
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A nice story with a twist. Olivia can talk to the animals and her dog often steals the show. This is about family and what is important. Tanner Quinn has faced loss and is trying to keep everything safe. When he arrives in Stone Creek everything changes and he faces what is important and what is not. The romance is at the heart of the story and brings everything into focus.

Patience for ChristmasPatience for Christmas by Grace Burrowes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Patience is a friend of the Windham sisters so there is a tie in to the Windham series. It is set before any of the sisters marry. Patience was ruined and makes her living writing for a local paper. She has an advice column and now there is a compensation between her column and on in another paper. There are two secrets in play and a building romance between the owners of the to columns. I loved how Patience grew and became more independent and how her boss reacted to her growth. A really nice Christmas romance with just a little tension to go with the romance.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 321 - Respect for Christmas by Grace Burrowes

Respect for ChristmasRespect for Christmas by Grace Burrowes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A strange title that only becomes clear as you read the story. Henrietta Whitlow and Michael Brenner do quite dance in this charming novella. Family and the importance of family is at the heart of the story. Of course it is a love story and there are problems and perceptions that must be resolved. That is where the respect comes in. A very nice Christmas tale.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Wrangler's Rescue (The Montana Cahills, #7)Wrangler's Rescue by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Cahills are usually in Montana so when Flint gets a call that his brother has fallen off a cruise ship and drowned it is one big surprise. I have to give B.J. Daniels credit she once again finds a way to put a new spin on a western romance. This has it all. There is tension and danger as the story unwinds. What seemed to be impossible does turn out to have events that expand what seems to be the unexplainable. Great job with the last Cahill brother getting his HEA.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 312 - My One and Only Duke by Grace Burrowes, Western Christmas Brides by Lauri Robinson

My One and Only Duke (Rogues to Riches, #1)My One and Only Duke by Grace Burrowes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Two very interesting characters are at the start of this new series by Grace Burrowes. Quinn Wentworth is about to be hanged when he meets Jane Winston. This is the set up for a familiar trope. Jane is pregnant and broke. Quinn is about to die and has money. The solution - they marry. Then Quinn is pardoned. What comes next is familiar but very entertaining. Jane has to whip the Wentworth family into shape while Quinn is trying to find out who set him up. Love both Jane and Quinn and look forward to catching glimpses of them in future stories.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Western Christmas Brides: A Bride and Baby for Christmas\Miss Christina's Christmas Wish\A Kiss from the CowboyWestern Christmas Brides: A Bride and Baby for Christmas\Miss Christina's Christmas Wish\A Kiss from the Cowboy by Lauri Robinson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have been a Lauri Robinson fan for years and alway enjoy her stories. A Bride and Baby for Christmas has all the elements I love in her stories. Hannah Olsen wants a marriage that will be full of love for herself and her unborn baby. Teddy White was burned once before and does not want that to happen to him again. It takes some time to bring everything together but once it happens both get the perfect HEA. There are two other stories in the book. A nice collection that brings on the Christmas spirit.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 159 - Twisted Truths by Rebecca Zanetti, No Other Duke Will Do by Grace Burrowes

Twisted Truths (Blood Brothers, #3)Twisted Truths by Rebecca Zanetti
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This closes out the Blood Brothers series. Denver has never had much to say but this time he does a lot of talking. Noni has come back into Denver's life and she needs him to find a missing baby. All of the characters from this series and the previous series are a part of this story. There is a lot of tension and danger in the story. There is also a romance between Denver and Noni. A good end to the series.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

No Other Duke Will Do (Windham Brides, #3)No Other Duke Will Do by Grace Burrowes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Elizabeth Windham loves books and has not time for men. Julian St. David, Duke of Haverford needs money not a wife. Both find that they are attracted but accept that there is no future for the two of them. Another good story from Burrowes. I enjoyed seeing how books end up being what saves the day. Elizabeth and Julian are both great characters who are also very nice people. I could not help but pull for the two of them. A nice addition to the series.

As a captain in the army, Colin MacHugh led men, fixed what was broken, and fought hard. Now that he's a titled gentleman, he's still fighting—this time to keep his bachelorhood safe from all the marriage-minded debutantes. Then he meets the intriguing Miss Anwen Windham, whose demure nature masks a bonfire waiting to roar to life. When she asks for his help to raise money for the local orphanage, he's happy to oblige.

Anwen is amazed at how quickly Lord Colin takes in hand a pack of rambunctious orphan boys. Amazed at how he actually listens to her ideas. Amazed at the thrill she gets from the rumble of his Scottish burr and the heat of his touch. But not everyone enjoys the success of an upstart. And Colin has enemies who will stop at nothing to ruin him and anybody he holds dear.

EXCERPT:

He’d taken care that this kiss be private, and thus unhurried.
Anwen liked the unhurried part exceedingly. Lord Colin held her not as if she were frail and fragile, but as if she were too precious to let go. His arms were secure about her, and he’d tucked in close enough that she could revel in his contours—broad chest, flat belly, and hard, hard thighs, such as an accomplished equestrian would have.
Soft lips, though. Gentle, entreating, teasing…
Anwen teased him back, getting a taste of peppermint for her boldness, and then a taste of him.
“Great day in the morning,” he whispered, right at her ear. “I won’t be able to sit my horse if you do that again with your tongue.”
She did it again, and again, until the kiss involved his leg insinuated among the folds and froths of her riding habit, her fingers toying with the hair at his nape, and her heart, beating faster than it had at the conclusion of their race.
“Ye must cease, wee Anwen,” Lord Colin said, resting his cheek against her temple. “We must cease, or I’ll have to cast myself into yonder water for the sake of my sanity.”
“I’m a good swimmer,” Anwen said. “I’d fish you out.” She contemplated dragging a sopping Lord Colin from the Serpentine, his clothes plastered to his body….
“Such a sigh,” he said, kissing her cheek. “If ye’d slap me, I’d take it as a mercy.”
“I’d rather kiss you again.” And again and again and again. Anwen’s enthusiasm for that undertaking roared through her like a wild fire, bringing light, heat, and energy to every corner of her being.
“You are a bonfire in disguise,” he said, smoothing a hand over her hair. “An ambush of a woman, and you have all of polite society thinking you’re the quiet one.” He peered down at her, his hair sticking up on one side. “Am I the only man who knows better, Anwen?”
She smoothed his hair down, delighting in its texture. Red hair had a mind of its own, and by the dawn’s light, his hair was very red.
“No, you are not the only one who knows better,” she said, which had him looking off across the water, his gaze determined.
“I’m no’ the dallyin’ kind,” he said, taking Anwen’s hand and kissing it. “I was a soldier, and I’m fond of the ladies, but this is… you mustn’t toy with me.”

Everlasting celestial trumpets. “You think I could toy with you?”

REVIEW:

Once Again Burrowes has written a hit.  I met Colin MacHugh and Anwen Windham in The Trouble With Dukes where they were side characters. Now they have their own story but there is no smooth sailing for the two.  People who Colin though were friends turn out to be just the opposite and they do not want Colin and Anwen to have a happy ending.  Throw in some very young orphans with some interesting personalities and habits to spice up the mix and the story gets even more interesting.  There are two more Windham sisters who need a HEA so there are more stories in the series  to look forward too.

I ASKED GRACE WHAT HER TOP FIVE RESOURCES WERE AND HERE THEY ARE:

Only FIVE? Yikes!
11.     The Oxford English Dictionary (only available online in the unabridged version)
22.     The Language of Flowers (Running Press)
33.     Grose’s Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1811)
44.     Google n-gram (not a book, but indispensable resource)

55.     My keeper novels. When the writing doesn’t seem to be going well or the characters aren’t talking to me, I re-read my keepers, over and over and over, and then everything is ALL BETTER.

REVIEW:

From the start it was fun to visit with the Windham's again. Most of the original cast from the first series make an appearance in the book and try to play a part in the match making. Once again there are Windham daughters who need husbands. While the main Windham family have all found their HEA there are some cousins who have not and they surely cannot find their soul mate without help. That help is something that Megan Windham does not want or need. When she meets Hamish MacHugh she finds just what she is looking for. She sees the man behind the gossip and she likes what she sees. He sees someone who can be his salvation but their path is not without problems. Look for a great story full of tension and romance. One of my very favorite things is how Hamish manages to change the titles of the Windham men to something similar but funny. I got several good laughs out of those scenes. Burrowes does a good job of injecting humor into some of the serious moments in the story. Megan is just the first of 3 sisters to find that perfect husband. I look forward to more great scenes with all of the Windham's.

GRACE BURROWES TOP FIVE PLACES TO TRAVEL FOR INSPIRATION

I asked Grace what her top five places to travel for inspiration were and here are her answers.?

Between the pages of a good book. I have learned so much, had such fun, and gathered up so many cool ideas by reading. Who needs frequent flier miles when we have all these lovely books?

Anywhere on horseback. When I’m in the saddle, my mind works differently. I might arrive to the barn stuck for where my manuscript should go next, but as I’m trotting this way and that, nonverbally communicating with my trusty steed, ideas bubble up. I love that. I think for many people, this happens while jogging, gardening, or otherwise being absorbed in a pleasure.

The United Kingdom. Many of my books are set in the UK, and I go there every chance I get. I never know what snippet of conversation I’ll overhear, road sign I’ll spot, or joke I’ll be told that simply MUST find its way into a book.

Roadtrips! I’ve driven from DC to San Diego and back more times than I can count. Behind the wheel of my truck, rolling down the interstates, I often get to thinking, and thinking leads to imagining, and that leads to interesting books.

Armstrong Redwoods State Nature Reserve (California). I love big trees, and the citizens of this forest are very big and very old. They humble me and put my little worries into perspective. I can hear myself think when I’m around big trees, and I’m less anxious. I don’t know why that is, but it’s been true about me from little up.

What Else I Read in May 2015

Books:

Crazy for the Cowboy by Vicki Lewis Thompson - Nice story with two interesting characters.  Vince is a rolling stone while Georgina is not.  Things don't look that good for the two.  I loved Georgina.  She is strong and very steady.  Vince is the same he just does not realize it.  Nice story with a great romance and a great set up for the next book in the series.

The Duke's Disaster by Grace Burrowes - A nice story about two who marry for practical purposes.  There is a interesting twist and some drama about Lady Thea's past. Mostly it has great dialog between the two main characters and a nice HEA.

A Fortune for the Outlaw's Daughter - by Lauri Robinson - Set in the Alaska gold rush two people who do not want to ever marry and will not let anyone tell them what to do have a big change of heart.  There is danger in the story.  Mostly it is a nice romance with a look into life as a gold miner.

Heart of the Hawk by Justine Davis – This is a western with a touch of the paranormal.  Josh Hawk is a gunfighter and the last of his line.  Kate Dixon is the widow of a man he just killed.  Does not sound like the start of a love story.  The paranormal? Well anytime the line comes down to the last Hawk a book appears telling the story of the Hawks and pointing to how the line will continue.  Kate and Josh just have to understand what the book is telling them.  I have read and enjoyed Davis’s science fictions stories.  Seeing a western with the paranormal bend caught my attention.  I was glad it did.  Josh and Kate both are great characters and I loved their story. It is book two in the Hawk trilogy but does a very good job as a stand alone.

War of Shadows by Gail Z. Martin - The War of Shadows, the next book in The Ascendant Kingdom series, is a book I have been waiting for.  It was great to see Blaine “Mick” McFadden along with all of his friends from previous books. This picks up when book 2 left off. Blaine has bound the magic but there are problems.  The magic needs more than one person to hold it steady.  There are others who want control of both the magic and the kingdom.  This is the story of both Blaine and those who are his friends and those who are his enemies.  Look for tension, danger, war and more of the magic that is part of The Ascendant Kingdom.   Like the previous two books several problems are solved but there are more before things feel safe for Blaine and friends.  I would have liked more time with Blaine and his group but it was interesting to see the other characters.

His Blushing Bride by Dani Collins – A cute love story with two fun characters.  Both say they do not want anything but a fun fling but we know better. Collins takes a common theme and spins it into a fun story with great characters.  This is part of The Montana Born Brides but works well as a stand alone.

Orbs by Nicholas Sansbury Smith – Orbs is a alien invasion story with a different twist.  The aliens send down their worker bees but we never see the brains behind the invasion. What we do see is a small group of people who get much more than they signed up for.  They are working very hard to survive and everything seems to be going against them.  Don’t look for a solution to the invasion.  This is book one in the series and while there is a small hope they can destroy the invaders it is very small.  This is a tension filled story where the action drives the characters.  Most things are still up in the air at the end of the book.  I hope that book two comes out soon as I want to see how they destroy the invaders and retrieve what has been stolen.

Defiant by Karina Sumner-Smith – I loved Radiant, book one in the Towers Trilogy.  Book two, Defiant, is just as good.  Sumner-Smith has built a world filled with interesting and different characters and situations.  This time Xhea and her ghost friend Shai should be safe but things are changing in the Lower City.  I loved how the friendship between Shai and Xhea was at the heart of the story.  Even when they were separated and their tether broken each was still important to the other.  There is much to be learned and much to overcome and the journey is filled with many different problems and dangers.  Defiant is a great blend of magic and characters set in a world very different from any other I have seen.

Colton Cowboy Protector by Beth Cornelison – This is the start of a great new contemporary cowboy romance/thriller series.  Tracy McCain does not realize she is in danger until someone tries to kill her.  Jack Colton does not want Tracy around his son when she arrives.  Jack is a very closed off character.  Tracy is looking for family and Jack’s son is all that is left.  Look for great back story, character introduction and on going mystery as you read.  While one mystery is solved one is left hanging.  Even though Jack is taken there are plenty of Colton’s available for future books.

Audio Books:

Deceived by Irene Hannon - This was an interesting mystery.  The characters were very complex and showed more than one side.  I enjoyed how the story line was developed.  While there were a lot of coincidences it did make everything flow.  This was listed as a Christian Mystery.  The Christian part just intruded in the story.  It would have worked just as well without the mention of church and faith but I was not enough to turn anyone off of the story.
