Together Again

At the Crossroads (Buckhorn, Montana, #3)At the Crossroads by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Alexis Brand and Culhane Travis enter the story at the crossroads and end up together again. They were partners until a corrupt sheriff fired them. Now both end up on the run. This is a fast paced plot with a lot of danger and tension. Of course there is room for romance even as danger draws near. Nice to be back in Buckhorn, Montana for the third time.

Typical Is Not Bad

Trouble In Big Timber (Mills & Boon Heroes) (Cardwell Ranch: Montana Legacy, Book 5)Trouble In Big Timber (Mills & Boon Heroes) by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ford and Hitch meet because of an old flame of Ford's. They have to find out if Ford is being used to get away with murder. Along the way there are some interesting characters who work with and against them. This is typical of B. J. Daniels stories. Lots of action, tension, danger, and a background romance.

Love Lasts

Out of the Storm (Buckhorn, Montana, #1)Out of the Storm by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a little Different from other B.J. Daniels books. It has the elements you would expect but they are mixed a little differently. You can look for romance and tension and danger. The ending is a little unexpected but fits the story line. Love last forever is the big theme.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Two more the judge saved from a life in prison. They were friends and much more back then s when one is in danger the judge sends the other. An interesting story line with a surprise at the end. Restless Hearts (Montana Justice #1)Restless Hearts by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blaze and Jake have a history that tore them apart Now they are together and taking on the town and neighbors to prove her Father is innocent of murder. There is romance, danger, tension and a plot full of twists and turns. First in the Montana Justice series it is a high bar for the rest of the series to meet.

Good Series

Heartbreaker (Montana Justice Book 2)Heartbreaker by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really liked the two main characters in the new book. Both had secrets in their past and both tried to keep emotion out of the picture There was the usual mix of danger, tension and romance that kept the story moving at a brisk pace. Just when you though everything was going to be OK another event sent the characters off on another adventure.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 359 - Stroke of Luck by B.J. Daniels, The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal

Stroke of LuckStroke of Luck by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really loved the plot in Stroke of Luck. I was in the dark about who did what and who was who for most of the book. The two main characters (Will and Poppy) have a history that is playing out as danger, tension and death stalk the Sterling Montana's Ranch season opening. This is a great start to a new series with Luck being a big part of the story. There is a small touch of the paranormal in the story line as there is one character who believes in curses.

The Calculating Stars (Lady Astronaut, #1)The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Calculating Stars title is a play on words and a very clever one. The setting follows what happens when a large meteor strikes the earth setting up the need to find a way off planet as this may be an climate cataclysm. The story follows Elma York, a math genius and WASP pilot as she works to get humans into space. I loved the detail in the story and Mary Robinette Kowal does a really great job reading her creation. The background shows that the author did a lot of research as she wrote the book. I also identified with Elma and her struggle to included as an astronaut. That made it a very difficult book to quit listening to. I love that this is book one in the series and that I can connect with Elma in future books.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 321 - Respect for Christmas by Grace Burrowes

Respect for ChristmasRespect for Christmas by Grace Burrowes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A strange title that only becomes clear as you read the story. Henrietta Whitlow and Michael Brenner do quite dance in this charming novella. Family and the importance of family is at the heart of the story. Of course it is a love story and there are problems and perceptions that must be resolved. That is where the respect comes in. A very nice Christmas tale.

Wrangler's Rescue (The Montana Cahills, #7)Wrangler's Rescue by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Cahills are usually in Montana so when Flint gets a call that his brother has fallen off a cruise ship and drowned it is one big surprise. I have to give B.J. Daniels credit she once again finds a way to put a new spin on a western romance. This has it all. There is tension and danger as the story unwinds. What seemed to be impossible does turn out to have events that expand what seems to be the unexplainable. Great job with the last Cahill brother getting his HEA.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 272- Death of a Clone by Alex Thomson

Death Of A CloneDeath Of A Clone by Alex Thomson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is an interesting mystery. There are a limited number of people on the astroid so there are limited number of suspects. We see the mystery through Leita eyes. She is a clone as are most of the other on the astroid. Leita is channeling Miss Marple as she worked through who killed her sister clone. Her sister was close to learning a secret and as Leita works she finds the clues her sister found. This is a good mystery and it is solved but for me it was sad ending. It does highlight what we do to one another is the quest for wealth.

Rancher's Dream (The Montana Cahills, #6)Rancher's Dream by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This one had it all. There is mystery, danger and a romance that has been on hold for years. Another of the Cahills bites the dust but not before he almost loses the woman he has loved for years. This starts with Drey getting married to a high powered business man who disappears on their wedding night. There is danger to Drey and the only one she feels she can turn to is Hank. They finally solve their problems as they work to discover what is going on. This is very much a thriller with a side story about a mother finding the daughter she gave away years ago. Nice match to the series.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews #232 - Lady Rogue by Theresa Romain, Cowboy's Redemption by B.J. Daniels

Lady Rogue (The Royal Rewards #3)Lady Rogue by Theresa Romain
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lady Isabel Morrow and Bow Street Runner Callum Jenks should have nothing in common but their paths have crossed twice before. Now Isabel needs help and calls on Jenks to help her. Her late husband had secrets that could come out and do damage to Isabel and her ward. There is danger, tension, and romance put together in a story that is very different from most historical romances set in this time period. Isabel and Callum are from very different social levels and that adds to the tension. I loved how everything finally worked in their favor. There was a very unexpected turn in the plot that really surprised me.

Cowboy's Redemption (The Montana Cahills)Cowboy's Redemption by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A one night stand, a cult and a baby are at the heart of the Cowboy's Redemption. Colt McCloud and Lola Dayton had the one night stand. At the time Lola was running from cult members and Colt's fiancee had just broken up with him. They felt a connection and it reawakened 18 months later when Lola came to Colt asking for help getting their daughter away from the cult. Danger, tension and romance followed. Both are new characters to this series. They are aided by characters from previous books. The plot is interesting, the characters are well developed and both Lola and Colt have to make some life changing decisions after they get the baby back. A nice addition to the series.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 208 - Covert Game by Christine Feehan, Hero's Return by B.J. Daniels

Covert Game (GhostWalkers #14)Covert Game by Christine Feehan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second GhostWalkers book I have read and I had not trouble following the story line. Gino Mazza and Zara Hightower are the next two to get an HEA. Zara starts out in big trouble and in a what seems to be a suicide mission Gino helps rescue her. He is immediately attracted and she feels the same. There is a theme about individuals and what they need that is a big part of this story. That is mixed with a high level of tension as two different groups try for Zara. A nice story about how individuals differ and how friends often put the wrong pressure on because it is not what they would want.

Hero's ReturnHero's Return by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Tucker Cahill is back. Before Hero's Return he has just been missing for 18 years and we all wondered if we would ever find out why and where he went. We do find out why but not where. A decades old mystery comes into the light and Tucker is part of both the mystery and the solution. Along the way he meets Kate Rothschild whose brother is also part of the mystery. They have a very complicated route before finally solving what really happened and who was responsible. This was a nice way to finally meet Tucker and bring him back into the family life of the Cahill's.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 160 - The Bad Girl and the Baby by Nina Croft, Cowboy's Legacy by B.J. Daniels, A Very Merry Princess by Susan Mallery

The Bad Girl and the Baby (Cutting Loose)The Bad Girl and the Baby by Nina Croft
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have not read the first two books in this series but that did not matter. The Bad Girl and the Baby had no problem as a stand-alone. I loved Darcy Butler. She knew who and what she was and understood that people had a very different picture because of the three years she spent in prison. Her one regret - that prison time is keeping her from seeing her niece LuLu. Captain Matt Peterson is raising his and her niece and is determined to keep Darcy away. I liked how Matt slowly came to terms with what happened LuLu's parents and to accept that Darcy was very different from the picture he was carrying around. There is a great mix of family drama and romance that kept me reading. A interesting twist as usually it is the male who has the bad person role. It was fun seeing the switch with a bad girl and not a bad boy.

Cowboy's Legacy (Cahill Ranch #3)Cowboy's Legacy by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When Maggie disappears everyone thinks they know who took her. Seems they should have been looking in another direction. Sheriff Flint Cahill is looking forward to asking Maggie to marry him when she disappears. The story goes in several direction and we get to visit again with Frank and Lottie. They are now PI's and help unravel the complex story line. Even as I suspected from the first that someone unknown had kidnapped Maggie I did not see the connection to another mystery. As always there is a look at another pair who have been a part of this series. There are still three unmarried Cahill bothers so time will tell if that pair make it. As always from B.J. Daniels the mystery in interesting, the romance good and the characters well developed. All wrapped up in a very complex plot.

A Very Merry PrincessA Very Merry Princess by Susan Mallery
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Beth Archer is not who she says she is and that is going to cause a lot of trouble for her and for Cade Saunders. Seems the have a lot in common as long as she is plain Beth and not Princess Bethany. Beth is a horse person and is Cade and the horse has a big role as does the barn cat. The two humans flirt a lot, try to take it easy, and in the end almost come to a complete split over something that turns out to be very unimportant. A nice addition to the series and a chance to visit with character from previous novels in the series.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 139 - Champion by Anna Hackett, Rough Rider by B.J. Daniels, On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service by Rhys Bowen

Champion (Galactic Gladiators, #5)Champion by Anna Hackett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Blaine Strong has been the iffiest of the humans captured and sold into slavery. He has been drugged and made to fight to the death before being rescued. Now he has to try to come to terms with what and who he is now and for that he needs help. Saff Essikani is the one to provide it but not without a lot of danger, tension and new problems for the Galactic Gladiators. The world building and back story was done in the previous novellas but there is some tucked into the story line if you missed the first stories. This one brings Blaine and Saff together in a rescue operation, sets the stage for the next story in the series and is a satisfying read with a nice romance for our two main characters.

Rough Rider (Whitehorse, Montana: The McGraw Kidnapping)Rough Rider by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Boone McGraw and C.J. Knight are on a collision course and don't know it. Both are looking for answers; C.J. to the murder of her partner and Boone hoping to find his sister kidnapped twenty-five years ago. It takes some time but their two investigations come together into one as C.J. learns about secrets her partner kept from her and someone from the past tries to kill both Boone and C.J. A nice ending to the series but there are still characters who need their story. This was a three book series but I hope that we set to see the twins get a HEA like their older brothers.

On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service (Her Royal Spyness #11)On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service by Rhys Bowen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Georgie finds herself with a locked room mystery when she goes to a house party at the request of the Queen. Once again Darcy shows up unexpectedly to provide back up but Georgie is the one to save the day. Their wedding seems to be getting closer while someone sets off to try and stop another wedding from taking place. I love Georgie and Darcy but am hoping they will someday tie the knot. I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens in the next book. This was a very nice mystery even though it was apparent to me if not to Georgie who the villain was.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 134 - Fire Bound by Christine Freehan, White Trash Zombie Unchained by Diana Rowland, Dead Ringer by B.J. Daniels

Fire Bound (Sea Haven/Sisters of the Heart, #5)Fire Bound by Christine Feehan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another sister finds her HEA but not without encountering a lot of danger along the way. Lisa Piner and Casimir Prakenskii have a common goal and neither expect to survive. They plan to kill the family looking for the Prakenskii brothers. When they meet they find they have other goals as well. Look for some well planned ops, a lot of sex (at least 2 CDs worth) and a unexpected romance. This is par for the course for Freehan's book but it was fun to see what and how Lisa and Casimir planned and pulled everything off.

White Trash Zombie Unchained (White Trash Zombie, #6)White Trash Zombie Unchained by Diana Rowland
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Zombies are real and Angel Crawford knows because she is one. Angel is such a great characters. I have watched her change from someone who was a loser to someone who works at her job, got her GED and is now going to community college. This time she is trying to stop a epidemic of strange zombies who are the mindless killing kind. What is fun is watching Angel take care of the people around her as she offers new views into what is happening and how to find a cure. She also ends up with some very interesting pets. This series just keeps getting better and better. According to Rowland's web site this could be the last book in the series but I hope I get to visit with Angel in future books.

Dead Ringer (Whitehorse, Montana: The McGraw Kidnapping, #2)Dead Ringer by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Abby Pierce and Ledger McGraw have a history. Abby is a battered wife and this time she was nearly killed because of something she overheard. Ledger comes to her rescue. Abby's secret and the return of one of the kidnapped McGraw twins are the two elements that drive the story. Along the way both arrive at their HEA. There is still a mystery to be solved and one McGraw brother left to get an HEA. A nice story with predictable action but fun to read.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 121 - Terran by Cara Bristol, Dark Horse by B.J. Daniels, Revenger by Alastair Reynolds

Terran (Breeder, #2)Terran by Cara Bristol
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Both Tara and Alpha Marlix were side characters in Breeder the first story in the series. Marlin starts out as an enemy of the treaty with Terra but he has a secret. Unlike other males on his planet he prefers sex with females not other males. When he rescues Tara feeling that he does not want drive the plot in the story. Tara starts out as a very strong characters but for me she weakens as her attraction to Marlix becomes stronger. Even so I liked the story. There is danger and tension driving the story line. While Marlix and Tara come to their HEA there is a lot more to change on the planet Parson.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Dark HorseDark Horse by B J Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dark Horse is the start of the three book trilogy set in Whitehorse, Montana. Look for characters from previous books in the same setting. This time there is a 25 year old case to solve and Nikki St. James is going to make this her next true crime novel. There are secrets galore in the story. Nikki has one, as do the other members of the McGraw family. There is a current crime in addition to the 25 year old mystery of who took the McGraw twins. There were plenty of twist and turns as the story progressed. Nikki ended up solving two mysteries as well as finding one of the McGraw brothers to fall in love with. A great story that had a partial solution to the twins mysteries. There are still two McGraw brothers who need a HEA and the rest of the mystery to be solved so look for the next two books in the series.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

RevengerRevenger by Alastair Reynolds
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved the setting of Revenger. There are hundred or maybe thousands of world that surround the old sun. None are that large and all have been occupied before. Revenger is set in the latest occupation and there are ships that look for and find the items left from previous occupations. Adrana and Fura Ness have a unique talent. They can read the skulls left from a previous occupation and those reading lead to bobbles or small locked worlds left from those who came before. When tragedy strikes Adrana is stolen and Fura starts on a quest to get her back. I have to admit that Fura is a character that I really did not like that much but I did admire her single minded focus to recover her sister. This was really fascinating science fiction. The world building, the backstory, and the plot kept me riveted to the story. I did listen to this as an audio book and the reading did a very good joy of telling the story in Fura's first person voice. A great book for Science Fiction fans.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 103 - Outlaw's Honor by B.J> Daniels, The Stowaway Experiment by Katherine Bogle, The Dispatcher by John Scalzi

Outlaw's Honor (Cahill Ranch #2)Outlaw's Honor by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Darby Cahill and Mariah Ayres should not be a match but turns out they are. Mariah is on the run. That is the danger in Outlaw's Honor. Darby decides to help her face that danger. None of that happens overnight. Theirs is a romance that has more than the usual number of problems. Daniels has a theme where she features other couples whose romance spans several books in a series. This time it is Flint and Maggie and there is plenty of danger and tension that needs to be resolved before they have their HEA. A nice addition to the Cahill Ranch series. There are still other Cahill brothers who need to find romance so I have additional books to look forward to.

The Stowaway Experiment: A Dominion Rising Short StoryThe Stowaway Experiment: A Dominion Rising Short Story by Katherine Bogle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a short story that introduces the Dominion Rising series. In the story we hear about the Smugglers Legion and Chaplain Eria through the eyes of Rikkard Gunnar. Gunnar is on a mission to steal information and manages to pick up a stowaway, one who does not seem to know who she is. Turns out she has some interesting talents. Story left a lot of question and not many answers but it si a good teaser for the first book in the series, The Alder Dominion.

The DispatcherThe Dispatcher by John Scalzi
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a strange little story; part mystery and part science fiction. It seems that if you are murdered you come back to life but it you die of natural causes you do not. So if you are near death the Dispatcher kills you so you can come back. The mystery - a Dispatcher has gone missing and the police and another Dispatcher are trying to find him. While I enjoyed the story it really did not have much meat to it. I did not think the premise did not make a lot of sense.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews - #78 - Renegade;s Pride by B.J. Daniels, Wind River Cowboy by Lindsay McKenna, The Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas

Renegade's Pride (Cahill Ranch #1)Renegade's Pride by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Look for some spice in this story. While the story line is about a murder committed 9 years ago Daniels has added some very different spice in this series. It seems that Lillian's father thinks he was abducted by aliens years ago and that they are still coming around. Look for hints to why he thinks that. I liked how Lillian had fulfilled some of her dreams while Trask was gone and how Trask had matured before he came back to prove he was innocent. There is a side romance featuring Lillian's older brother that looks like it will be a long running issue as the series progresses. A nice start to a new series that is set once again in Montana.

Wind River Cowboy (Wind River Valley #3)Wind River Cowboy by Lindsay McKenna
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Garret was featured in the previous book. Like the other characters in the story he is ex-military and suffering from PTSD. He has found a place on Wind River Ranch. Now Kira a new vet has arrived and she was part of his black ops team. This is a nice story that uses the problems some of our returning vets are having as background for the story. A nice romance between Garret and Kira with some added problems. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. There is one problem that is outside the PTSD of the characters and it is adding to the tension in the story. It is keeping me wondering how that will be resolved.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Devil in Spring (The Ravenels, #3)Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, does not want to get married and has gone to great pains to see that he stays single. ( If that title seems familiar you probably read The Devil in Winter where there was another Lord St. Vincent who did not want to get married. This is his son.) Lady Pandora Ravenel feels the same about marriage so of course they find themselves in a compromising situation which is really innocent but looks otherwise. A fun story with a lot of laugh out loud moments. It was nice seeing Gabriel's parents again along with the Ravenels. Look for an interesting hook when a side characters catches their attention. I was left wondering who he really was. A fun addition to the series.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews - #74 - Sand Sharks by Margaret Maron, Wrangled by B.J. Daniels,

Sand Sharks (Deborah Knott Mysteries, #15)Sand Sharks by Margaret Maron
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another slow walk with Judge Knott. This time she is at a judges meeting and we get to follow her as she visits with friends, sees several men she interacted with in the past and watch as she helps solve the murder of a fellow judge. Dwight is at another conference and Cal is visiting friends so this one features mostly Deborah. I am listening to these out of order so my next one I will check out will the the one before this. I keep moving back to get to the one where she and Dwight get together. I did love meeting Alan, who was almost her first husband. Only reason he was not - he was still married to someone else when he married Deborah.

Wrangled (Whitehorse, MT: Chisholm Cattle Co., #6)Wrangled by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I picked this on up at in the used book section of a local non-profit store. I like B.J. Daniels books and had not read any of The Chisholm Cattle Company books. This is the last in the series and it is a nice finish. I liked Zack and Dakota. What I really liked about Dakota was the fact that she believed Zack even though the evidence was against him. The set up with Zack was just part of the mystery. Watching Zack and Dakota work against time to find the answers kept my attention.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews #26 - Runway Colton by Karen Whiddon, Cardwell Christmas Crime Scene by B.J. Daniels, Into the Guns by William Dietz

 Runaway ColtonRunaway
Colton by Karen Whiddon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This time it is Piper Colton who is the runaway. Everyone is still trying to find out who happened to her father and someone is framing her for the deed. She asks Cord Maxwell to help her clear her name. He makes a bargain with her and the story takes off from there. The introduction to the Colton family and much of the back story is in pervious books. Even so this can be read as a stand-alone. This is one of those series where there is a mystery that is part of the main plot in each book. The mystery is not solved here but it looks like it might be in the next book. I have been keeping up with the series and look forward to finds out where that missing Colton is.  Goodreads did not have a cover for the book.

Cardwell Christmas Crime SceneCardwell Christmas Crime Scene by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

We are back on the Cardwell Ranch. This time for Christmas and of course another mystery with some new characters. Dee Anna Justice has just learned that she has more family than her father who is in prison. When she arrives at the Cardwell Ranch she finds that her father has called in a favor and asked Beau Tanner to keep her safe. It seems that other half of her family (who she also did not know about) may want her dead. Daniels has written another interesting story set on the Cardwell Ranch.

Into the Guns: The First America Rising NovelInto the Guns: The First America Rising Novel by William C. Dietz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It seems that post-apocalyptic is the new rage and William Dietz has added a new addition. Into the Guns is book one in a new series. It has all the elements that make up this series. The destruction around the world is caused by a large meteors hitting the Earth. The story starts with a Army unit in the Pacific Northwest and follows them as everything falls apart then slowly starts to come back together. Into the Guns introduces the characters, sets up the world building, and brings the main plot point into focus. This is book one so it only goes so far. It just stops after one crisis is solved so book two and three for the rest of the story.
