Fun To Watch

City of Shadows (Counterfeit Lady #5)City of Shadows by Victoria Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It was fun to see Gideon drawn into a con. Elizabeth kept him on the outside but present as she, friends and family proceeded to con the con artist. Great story, wonderful plot and fun as well. This series stays on my TBR list.

Great Characters

Murder on Wall Street (Gaslight Mystery, #24)Murder on Wall Street by Victoria Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sarah Brandt Malloy and Frank are pulled into a murder investigation. Along the line they encounter other interesting new and previous characters who play a important role in the story. I was surprised by who done it and they did it not once but twice. This is a very good addition to the story. At time I have worried that the series would end but here the story line, the plot and the characters still shine. Way to go Victoria Thompson.

New and Fresh

Murder on Pleasant Avenue (A Gaslight Mystery)Murder on Pleasant Avenue by Victoria Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Great seeing everyone again. Once again one of their own is in trouble. I did wonder who done it. I also know one character was not what she seemed. The story includes a lot of historical information woven into the setting and the plot. This series is holding its own with new and interesting characters and plots.

Short and Sweet Book Review

City of Scoundrels (Counterfeit Lady, #3)City of Scoundrels by Victoria Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It was good to see Elizabeth and Gideon again. They are such oil and water but still make a great pair. This time it is the widow Rose who needs help and of course they have to put together a con to right a wrong. Both are taking on traits that belong to the other. Elizabeth a little more honest, Gideon a little less honest. This is a great story with danger, tension, and edge of your seat action. The widow Rose is a great new character and I hope she shows up in future stories. With book three Counterfeit Lady is on track as a must follow mystery series. I love the historical events the author weaves into the story. Be sure to read the afterward to see what events really happened.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews: #383 - Who Slays the Wicked by C.S. Harris, Murder on Trinity Place by Victoria Thompson

Who Slays the Wicked (Sebastian St. Cyr, #14)Who Slays the Wicked by C.S. Harris
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Murder strikes close to home. Sebastian St. Cyr is called to the home of his niece's husband. He has been killed and his wife is one of the suspects. This one really baffled me. I suspected just about everyone except the one who did the deed. It is a great mystery and I really enjoyed visiting with both Sebastian and family. There is one thing that is missing from this book and the previous one. The arc about Sebastain's mother seems to have been dropped. Hope to hear more about that in future books.

Murder on Trinity Place (Gaslight Mystery #22)Murder on Trinity Place by Victoria Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is one where I saw the clues and who done it before the Frank and Sarah. It was fun seeing all the familiar characters again. The additional side story where Sarah is matchmaking was a added bonus. Great addition to the series. I would like to see Mother Malloy fleshed out a little more. She has a very limited role since Frank and Sarah married and fleshing her out and giving her a bigger role would add to role of the regular cast of characters.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 315 - City of Secrets by Victoria Thompson, Not Quite Over You by Susan Mallery

City of Secrets (Counterfeit Lady, #2)City of Secrets by Victoria Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Do two wrongs make a right? Is the rule of law always the way to right a wrong? Those are the questions that Elizabeth Miles and her fiancee Gideon must face and answer. Elizabeth wants to do what ever it takes to help a friend. Gideon wants to use the force of law to help. The issue looks like it will tear them apart as Elizabeth does what she thinks is right and Gideon objects. A well plotted mystery that had plenty of twists and turns. Set just before women got the right to vote the politics add interest to the story line.

Not Quite Over You (Happily Inc., #4)Not Quite Over You by Susan Mallery
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Silver and Drew have a history but both were to young to make a go of their romance. Now both are older and that history is standing in the way. I really liked how both Silver and Drew have grown and changed. Silver has become her own woman. Drew knows where he wants to stay but faces pressure from his family to leave. Add the secret that is coming to light and you get an interesting story with romance, tension and more romance.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 231 - Murder on Union Square by Victoria Thompson, A Touch of Flame by Jo Goodman

Murder on Union Square (Gaslight Mystery, #21)Murder on Union Square by Victoria Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This time it is Frank who needs to be cleared of a murder charge. All the characters rally around to find the guilty party. This one had me guessing the entire time. This series just keeps getting better and better. I love the interplay between all of the characters. Who knew that adopting Catherine would cause so much trouble. A law that should protect instead proves the pivot point of the plot.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

A Touch of Flame (The Cowboys of Colorado, #2)A Touch of Flame by Jo Goodman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jo Goodman writes dialog that has such a great flow. I loved how E. Ridley Woodhouse and Ben Madison play off of each other in dialog that brings a smile. Both are really interesting characters. E. Ridley is female and a doctor while Ben is the Sheriff. They keep interacting and building the tension in the story. I loved how the E. in Ridley's name is made such a fun part in the story. When the name is finally revealed it brings on more of that great dialog. A interesting story that highlights a problem that still around today.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 145 - A Christmas Affair by Jodi Thomas, Nimbus by Jacey Bedford, City of Lies by Victoria Thompson

A Christmas Affair (Ransom Canyon)A Christmas Affair by Jodi Thomas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One new character and several from previous books get their own story all wrapped up in Christmas. Maria has decided that she wants a Christmas affair and choose the storekeeper where she sells her jam. It was fun to watch how she goes about getting what she wants or does she. At the same time a a new teenager arrives to stay with his great uncles. He is primed to run but does he. Read to find out. This was very lighthearted and fun. A nice addition to the Ransom Canyon story.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

NimbusNimbus by Jacey Bedford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This wandered a bit before it got down to the meat of the book. The first part of the book continues the world building, back story and character development. There is tension but it is not as focused as it becomes when they go after nimbus. I enjoyed visiting Crossways and seeing the characters again. This does come to a interesting conclusion; the problems are solved, the bad guy is taken care of, the characters are in a good place and all seems well in the world. A nice finish to the series.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

City of Lies (Counterfeit Lady, #1)City of Lies by Victoria Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As soon as I saw that Victoria Thompson was starting a new series I was thrilled. I love her Gaslight Series and all the historical facts she puts into the story. City of Lies follows that same pattern. This time the setting is 1917 and features historical facts from the movement to allow women to vote. Elizabeth Miles is on the run when she joins a right to vote protest and gets everyone thrown into jail. Her family runs scams and she has just been caught up in one that goes bad. Elizabeth is very good at playing a role and her arrest and sentence have her playing a Lady in a time when the difference between Ladies and other women is very pronounced. It was fun to see how Elizabeth handled both her new friends and her less than honest family. Look forward to seeing Elizabeth in future books. Be sure and read what Victoria says about women and the movement involved in getting the vote for women. She used some actual historical events in the book and it is facinating to see all that was involved before women were allowed the vote.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 86 - Murder in the Bowery by Victoria Thompson, No One But You by Brenda Novak, Finding Our Forever by Brenda Novak

Murder in the Bowery (Gaslight Mystery #20)Murder in the Bowery by Victoria Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It is always fun to visit with Frank and Sarah. I liked that the story is set against the actual strike by newsboys in New York. Frank is looking for a specific newsboy. That leads to two murders that Frank decides to solve. The mystery has some very dark aspects that Thompson does a good job of working into the story line. Mauve and Gino play a part in the story and there is a set up for new stories in the hospital Sarah is starting. I am looking for more romance between Mauve and Gino. One thing I would like to see is a more complete look at Franks Mother. She has almost become a non character who is out of the room or leaves as the scene starts. I think she deserves better.
I received a free copy of Murder in the Bowery from First to Read in return for an honest review.  This is one of the mystery series I alway look forward to.

No One But You (Silver Springs, #2)No One But You by Brenda Novak
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Once again one of the graduates from the New Horizons Boys Ranch is at the center of the story. Darson Reed needs help but while he was acquitted of the murder of his parents people still think he did it and finding someone to work for him seems impossible. Enter Sadie Harris who has problems of her own. I liked how Novak worked innocent until proven guilty and the danger posted by stalkers into the story line. Both Darson and Sadie have to find an inner strength as they work to make a home for Darson's special needs sister. The danger to Sadie by her ex-husband brings extra tension to the story. Another good story with interesting characters. Silver Springs and New Horizons Boys Ranch look like a great place for interesting stories and characters.

Finding Our Forever (Silver Springs, #1)Finding Our Forever by Brenda Novak
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The first in a new series the setting in the town of Silver Springs and the New Horizons Boys Ranch located just out of town. Adoption and the need to find you birth partner is at the heart of the story. Aiyana, the ranch's owner, is the birth mother of Cora. Aiyana is such a strong character that you have to wonder why she gave her daughter away and why no-one knows that she ever had a child. Cora takes a job at the Ranch to get to know her birth-mother and is very torn about letting her know that she is the daughter she gave away. An added problem - Elijah Turner, Aiyana's adopted son and ranch manager is attracted to Cora and she to him. The handling of the adoption issue is very well handled and adds to the tension in the story. I loved both Cora and Eli and how they both handled the birth mother issue. I see a lot of great stories set in Silver Springs and New Horizons Boys Ranch.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews #17 Vicki Peterwald Rebel by Mike Shepherd, Only Beloved by Mary Balogh, Murder in Morningside Heights by Victoria Thompson

Vicki Peterwald: Rebel by Mike Shepherd

Rebel by Mike Shepherd
Science Fiction/Space Opera

In the latest Vicki Peterwald spin off from the Kris Longknife series we see Vicki gathering support against the coming battle with her stepmother.  There is a lot of action and a really good supporting cast most of which survived this time.  A fun space opera series with an ending that lets fans know that there will be more to come.

Historical Romance

Only Beloved by Mary Balogh
George, The Duke of Stanbrook as been an important side character in the Survivors series.  Now he is the only one who has not found love and an HEA.  As he watches the last survivor marry his thoughts turn to one person.  That starts a series of events that lead to both love and danger.   George has been keeping secrets about his late wife and son.  Those secrets bring danger to Dora, George’s new wife.  I really like how Balogh weaves the required sex into the story.  She writes only a few pages but they are more powerful than the page after page after page in must books today.

This is one of my favorites in the series.

Historical Mystery

Murder in Morningside Heights by Victoria Thompson
Frank and Sarah are back from Europe and settling into life as a married couple.  Both are just a little bored so when Abigail Northrup parents hire Frank to look into their daughters murder both are ready to take on the investigation.  There were a lot of red herrings in the case but this was one time that I knew who the killer was long before Frank and Sarah.  I missed the tension between Frank and Sarah that was there before their marriage.  I also missed seeing more of the important side characters.  A good mystery but not the best in the series.  Still I will be on the pre-order list when the next book makes its appearance.

Murder on St. Nicholas Avenue by Victoria Thompson

Historical Mystery

From Goodreads:

The author of Murder on Amsterdam Avenue returns to nineteenth-century New York City to find Christmas in the air, a police detective and a midwife with love in their hearts, and a wealthy newlywed with blood on her hands…

Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy and Sarah Brandt are not the only ones who have recently tied the knot. Family friend Mrs. O’Neill was delighted when her daughter Una wed the seemingly wealthy and charming Randolph Pollock. She didn’t wonder why such an affluent man would want to marry a poor Irish girl, no matter how pretty she was. But now Mrs. O’Neill has a problem.

Pollock’s servants have found their employer bludgeoned to death with Una cradling his body. Rendered mute by the horror of her husband’s death, Una cannot explain what happened, so the police have charged her with murder and locked her away in the Tombs to await trial.

Mrs. O’Neill would like Frank to investigate the case and save Una, yet with Frank and Sarah still on their honeymoon, it’s up to the other members of their newly formed household to do some detective work. But solving the mystery behind Pollock’s death means first discovering the truth about who he really is.

Murder on St. Nicholas Avenue is a bonus book in the Gaslight Mystery series and it is a very good bonus.  Thank you Victoria Thompson for this great Christmas gift.

Frank and Sarah are off on their honeymoon but that does not stop the mysteries that arrive on their door step.  Maeve and Gino join forces with Mr. and Mrs. Decker to solve what turns out to be more than a murder.

This book is great fun.  I loved the scenes between Mr . and Mrs. Decker.  She thinks she is keeping her involvement in this and previous cases from him but it turns out he has his suspicions.  There are some really laugh out loud moments when reading the dialog between the two.

This is a great set up for furture books.  We know more Maeve, Gino, Mrs. Decker and of course Mr. Decker.  A great side note.  Mr Decker did not realize his life was boring until he started helping solve some of the cases.

I look forward to these four have a more important role in future books.  It will add a new dimension to one of my favorite series.

Murder on Amsterdam Avenue Gaslight Mystery #17) by Victoria Thompson

Historical Mystery

From Goodreads:

In this Gaslight Mystery from the national bestselling author of Murder in Murray Hill, midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy investigate foul play in the secretive high-society world of nineteenth-century New York City…

In the midst of Sarah and Frank’s wedding preparations, Sarah accompanies her mother on a condolence call to the Upper West Side, where Charles Fairfax, the son of family friends, has died unexpectedly after suffering from a mysterious disease. It is a tragic and all too common story—or so it seems. Charles’s father asks to speak with Sarah privately. He believes his son was poisoned and would like Sarah and Frank to look into the matter with the utmost discretion.

Putting their own personal affairs on hold, Sarah and Frank soon learn that not everyone wants to know more about Charles’s death, particularly if he was murdered. As they unravel secrets that reach back to the War Between the States, they also discover that they are in the company of a very present danger.

With this 17th book Frank and Sarah finally marry but not until the very end of the book.  Frank is not longer with the police.  He could not  be effective there but he can function as a Private Detective and in Murder on Amsterdam Avenue that is what he does.  He is approached by Charles Fairfax’s father who thinks that his son’s death may be murder.  Both Frank and Sarah become a part of the investigation, as do Maeve, Sarah’s Mother and Gino.

Thompson has woven some of the characters from previous books into the story. Gino is one example.  We meet him as a young policeman who left the force to join Teddy Roosevelt in Cuba.  He comes home in this book and Frank hires him to help with the investigation.

Like previous cases this one is full of false clues and complicated history.  I did suspect that one character was not what she appeared and I was right.  However I did not pick out the actual murderer until the very end.

I always know I had a year to wait for the next book but guess what.  Not this time.  Frank and Sarah are off to Europe for their honeymoon and Gino and Maeve will help a young woman falsely accused of murder in Murder on St. Nichols Avenue.  That book will be published in November of this year. There is also a promise of many more adventures for Frank and Sarah.

Just a note.  I have wondered what Sarah is going to do now that she and Frank are married.  She can no longer work as a mid-wife and while Frank goes on to be a private detective Sarah is not one to sit and do nothing.  What does Thompson have planned for her to do?

THIS WEEK’S RANDOM QUESTION: What book would you currently recommend to someone? Why?

I just finished Murder on Amsterdam Street by Victoria Thompson.  It is part of the Gaslight Mystery series and I would recommend both the book and the series to any mystery fan.  I does a great job setting the historical detail of the time and has great characters.  Both add to the suspense and tension of each mystery.  To add a little cream to the mix there is also a long running romance between the two main characters, each from a very different social background.

Murder in Murray Hill (A Gaslight Mystery #16) by Victoria Thompson

Historical Mystery

From Goodreads:

When facing injustice, the residents of nineteenth-century New York City’s tenements turn to midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy to protect their rights. Now, as the Edgar® and Agatha Award–nominated series continues, the two must track down a cruel criminal preying on the hopes and dreams of innocent women…

A Gaslight Mystery

Frank Malloy has never known any life other than that of a cop, but his newfound inheritance threatens his position within his department. While trying to keep both his relationship with Sarah and his fortune under wraps, he’s assigned to a new case—finding a missing young woman for her worried father, Henry Livingston.

It seems the girl had been responding to “lonely hearts” ads in the paper for months before she disappeared. Her father thinks that she’s eloped with a deceptive stranger, but Malloy fears the worst, knowing that the grifters who place such ads often do much more than simply abscond with their victims. But as Sarah and Malloy delve deeper into a twisted plot targeting the city’s single women, it’s their partnership—both professional and private—that winds up in the greatest peril…

The Gaslight Mystery Series is one of my favorites.  I have to wait a year for each new book and I have to say Murder in Murray Hill was worth the wait.

I love Frank and Sarah.  They are such a mix-matched couple and it has been fun watching their relationship develop.  Murder in Murray Hill has the two looking for a killer and helping woman who have been kidnapped.

Mixed into the story are some of the issues they have to resolve before they marry.  One major issue is how to tell Frank’s Mother about their upcoming marriage and the money Frank has inherited.  .  I loved the scene and have gone back to re-read several times.  Then there is Frank’s job or the lack of job once the news of his new wealth comes out.  Added to all of that is the issue of where they will live.  Look for Mrs. Ellsworth’s hand in that issue.

The plot is great, the writing smooth and the action kept the story moving.  A additional plus to the series is how  the history of  New York at the turn of the century is worked into the story line.  Murder in Murray Hill can be read as a stand-alone but if you are a new start from the beginning.

I just started Murder on Fifth Avenue by Victoria Thompson.  This is book 14 in The Gaslight Mystery Series.  Here is how it starts.

Murder on Fifth Avenue (Gaslight Mystery #14)"Detective Sergeant Malloy?"

Frank hated answering stupid questions from goo-goos when he was in the middle of an investigation."

I had to keep reading to find out what a goo - goo was.  I love this series and Murder on Fifth Avenue is off to a great start.
