The Beginning:

"As she woke up in the pod, she remembered three things. First, she was traveling through open space. Second, she was about to start a new job, one she could not screw up. Third, she had bribed a government official into giving her a new identity file."

Page 56:

"A tool clattered to the ground. Kizzy's hands clenched into fists as the music swelled to a stormy crescendo She danced atop the shuddering ladder, her head still in the ceiling."

From The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. I have read several good reviews on this so checked it out at the library on my last trip.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews #79 - Hunter's Claim by S. E. Smith, Purr M For Murder by T.C. LoTempio, The Dog Stars by Peter Heller

Hunter's Claim (The Alliance, #1)Hunter's Claim by S.E. Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was March Starry Night Book Club (the club picks on Science Fiction Romance book a month) selection. I had already read the Jan and Feb books but March was new. I found the story to be typical of the alien raiders and humans women being their mates. The characters were very well written and the tension fit the story line. I liked it enough that I will check out the other books in the series.

Purr M for Murder (A Cat Rescue Mystery #1)Purr M for Murder by T.C. LoTempio
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sydney and her sister Kat love animals and are working to keep their no kill shelter open. However Trowbridge Littleton wants to shut it down. Nice set up for a murder and for Kat to look guilty. I liked how the shelter and no-kill were made a big part of the plot. There are several cats (my favorites) that are part of the story line. Toby, a big orange cat, often steels the show. There is the hint of a new romance for Sydney when Detective Will Worthington takes a job back in town. Just a hint but enough to add interest to the plot. A nice set up for a new cozy mystery series.

 The Dog StarsThe Dog Stars by Peter Heller
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Dog Stars is the Science Fiction Book Club selection for March. I found the book to be a little boring especially the first half. This would have been a Did Not Finish if for the book club. Having said that I will add that the second half was much more interesting than the first. Hig is an interesting character. I enjoyed the scenes where he is flying and I found the setting interesting. The flying scenes because I am a pilot and the setting because I have a good friend who lives on the Erie airport. This is a slow moving post-apocalyptic story and while Hig seems to have found something to keep him going there is not cure for what has happened to the human race or is there?

Ghost Touch by LA Dragoni - Book Blast and Giveaway

Ghost Touch
by LA Dragoni

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Paranormal Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

For fifteen minutes each night a portal opens in Tamara’s barn and a horde of ghosts spills into her yard. She and Dex work together to find a way to help Cal and the thousands of spirits stuck in the void to cross over. When she learns she has the ghost touch—the ability to touch the ghosts as if they were corporeal—and she accidentally helps a little boy cross, she believes it might be possible. But not all the spirits play nice and when they learn they can sip energy from her ghost touch, they become greedy putting her life at risk.

Each time Cal has to pull her from the mass of ghosts, her touch restores him more and more until he is at danger of being stuck on earth—forever, which is very enticing to Tamara the better she knows him. Will she and Dex figure out how to help the spirits cross and if they do, will she be able to let Cal go?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
An unnatural blue-white light spilled outward, making her squint. Blinding bright in the center, it faded to murky shadows in the corners. Tamara’s heart all but stopped when shapes developed within the bright center. A crowd of people surged forward, scattering in all directions across her yard.
There were so many. Panic filled Tamara while she tried to figure out what to do, how to defend herself against so many. Who were all these people? Why had they been in her barn? Why is that man digging?
“Hey, stop!” she yelled.
A woman in a torn red dress stumbled up the hill reminding Tamara of herself in last night’s dream. The woman’s long blond hair streamed behind her in the windless night. She continually glanced over her shoulder, a terrified expression gnarling her beautiful face, though no one pursued her.
Then a single man sauntered forward, his attention intent on Tamara. The bright light behind him made it impossible for her to make out any detail, but his manner seemed equal parts commanding and relaxed. Her heart fluttered madly, and she felt the muzzle of the rifle dip toward the ground as she considered fleeing. A flat, wide-brimmed cowboy hat sat straight on his head. Well-worn leather chaps covered his bowed legs. Strange clicking noises accompanied him across the lawn. As he drew closer his image sharpened. When Tamara saw his face, she lowered the gun barrel. “Sheesh, I am dreaming.”
She looked into the skinless face of her latest nightmare.
“Ma’am, I can assure you, this is no dream.”
Musing Mondays is a weekly meme that asks you to choose one of the following prompts to answer:
I’m currently reading…
Up next I think I’ll read…
I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
I can’t wait to get a copy of…
I wish I could read ___, but…
I blogged about ____ this past week…
THIS WEEKS RANDOM QUESTION:If you could be best friends with an author, who would you choose and why?
That would change as I read new authors.  Right now it would be Anne Bishop.  I love her others series and as a best friend I would be encouraging her to continue writing more books set in the Others world.  I would also want to know what she would be writing next so I could share if she gave me permission.
Stacking The Shelves - March 4, 2017
Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books I added to my shelves this week. They may it be physical or virtual. I include books I buy in a physical store or online, books I borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks!  Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga at Tynga's Reviews.  Follow the link to see what others have on their shelves.
I received an invitation to read two free different short prequels this week.  One was from Vicki Lewis Thompson titled A Cowboy's Promise, and was for her new Cowboy Romance series.  The other was from Audrey Sharpe titled Commander and was for her Science Fiction Starhawke Rising series.  Both were excellent.  If you are on the mailing list for either Vicki or Audrey check your email.  You probably have an invitation too.  Just a interesting fact:  Audrey is Vicki's daughter.
I also received several book for review from Netgalley.
Stolen Ink by Holly Evans, Outlaws Honor by B.J. Daniels, Mark of the Moon by Beth Dranaoff, The Unlikeable Demon Hunter by Deborah Wilde, If I Run by Terri Balckstock and Somebody's Baby by Donna Alward
Looks like I have a lot of reading to do.
Bored stiff.
Bored of being bored.
Page 56:
"Why are you encouraging this? Shouldn't you be a bit more discriminating when it comes to the potential mother of your grandchildren?"
From the latest book by Lisa Kleypas, Devil in Spring. I finished this one a few days ago and really enjoyed it. Kleypas writes great dialog that leaves the reading laughing while trying to continue reading.
Short and Sweet Book Reviews - #78 - Renegade;s Pride by B.J. Daniels, Wind River Cowboy by Lindsay McKenna, The Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas
Renegade's Pride (Cahill Ranch #1)Renegade's Pride by B.J. Daniels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Look for some spice in this story. While the story line is about a murder committed 9 years ago Daniels has added some very different spice in this series. It seems that Lillian's father thinks he was abducted by aliens years ago and that they are still coming around. Look for hints to why he thinks that. I liked how Lillian had fulfilled some of her dreams while Trask was gone and how Trask had matured before he came back to prove he was innocent. There is a side romance featuring Lillian's older brother that looks like it will be a long running issue as the series progresses. A nice start to a new series that is set once again in Montana.
Wind River Cowboy (Wind River Valley #3)Wind River Cowboy by Lindsay McKenna
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Garret was featured in the previous book. Like the other characters in the story he is ex-military and suffering from PTSD. He has found a place on Wind River Ranch. Now Kira a new vet has arrived and she was part of his black ops team. This is a nice story that uses the problems some of our returning vets are having as background for the story. A nice romance between Garret and Kira with some added problems. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. There is one problem that is outside the PTSD of the characters and it is adding to the tension in the story. It is keeping me wondering how that will be resolved.
I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Devil in Spring (The Ravenels, #3)Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, does not want to get married and has gone to great pains to see that he stays single. ( If that title seems familiar you probably read The Devil in Winter where there was another Lord St. Vincent who did not want to get married. This is his son.) Lady Pandora Ravenel feels the same about marriage so of course they find themselves in a compromising situation which is really innocent but looks otherwise. A fun story with a lot of laugh out loud moments. It was nice seeing Gabriel's parents again along with the Ravenels. Look for an interesting hook when a side characters catches their attention. I was left wondering who he really was. A fun addition to the series.
Alpha Lover by Brenda Sparks - Review Tour and Giveaway
Alpha Lover
by Brenda Sparks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   paranormal romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Starved for blood, vampire, Nicholai Peterhof is greatly relieved when two tourists decide to grace his restaurant, but one sip from the pretty brunette and his world is forever turned upside down. Juliette Staint-John is everything he could have asked for in a heartmate; pretty, smart, built with curves in all the right places…and totally unavailable.
Juliette doesn’t want anything to do with the handsome, young-looking Nicholai. As if their differences aren’t enough, the acute grief over the loss of loved ones keeps her heart guarded. He may be her fantasy, but that’s all he can ever be.
To get past Juliette’s defenses and in order to keep her safe, Nicholai must prove himself worthy of her love and trust. Unbeknownst to the couple, her personal demons are not the only ones threatening their relationship. Hiding virtually unseen by the vampires, Demon Royalty plots to destroy not only the couple but the entire vampire breed. Luckily, Nicholai will do anything for Juliette—even if it means sacrificing himself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
REVIEW:

I enjoy reading the different takes on vampires and Sparks has a new one.  Nicholai is an Alpha vampire who has lived for many years.  Juliette is a human who has lived through a great sadness during her short life.  It was interesting to see Juliette bloom after meeting Nicholai and watching Nicholai try to go very very slow when all he wants to do is throw her over his shoulder and take he to his home.  Both are interesting and complex characters.  Intertwined in their story is a parallel story featuring different characters.  The two are on a collision course and have a brief meeting in Alpha Lover.  However, the main thing that happens here is the set up for the conflict between the two different groups.  This is book two in the series but works well as a standalone.

                                                                   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
She had only a second to realize Nicholai stood in the doorway before Desmond’s powerful thighs brought him to the door in a single bound.
He grabbed Nicholai’s shirt with one hand, his other made a fist that landed squarely on Nicholai’s jaw.
Nicholai’s head snapped back. Shock took his face. With a mighty push, Nicholai threw Desmond backward across the room into one of the flowery couches. It moved under his weight, crashed into the end table, and the Tiffany lamp tumbled to the floor.
Julie’s eyes went wide. The two men became a blur of motion, bodies flying apart then back together. She had to concentrate to make out the shapes of hard forms in the powerful whirlwind.
Connor pulled, lunging at the whirling mass. His deep growls and barks added to the chaos as the two males swirled around the living room. They spun around the room like a tornado, moving so fast Juliette’s eyes did not register their kicks and punches. However, she heard bones crunch and the slap of skin while the two exchanged blows.
The furniture that exploded when the blurry mass neared evidenced the fierceness of their battle. Julie watched one piece of furniture after the next burst into pieces. First her delicate coffee table, next the end table where the Tiffany lamp had been, then the rocking chair. When the mass moved toward the antique credenza, Juliette screamed.
Her beautiful roses sprayed about the room. Red petals floated slowly to the floor in surreal contrast
