Book Beginnings and The Friday 56 - December 9th, 2016

I'm linking up with Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings and Freda's Voice for Page 56. Check out the links above for the rules and for the posts of the participants each week. Pick the closest book on your book stack and join the fun.

The Beginning:

"Rico hurled himself behind the huge trunk of a tree and stood, back pressed against the rough bark, as the missiles whizzed past."

Page 56:

"Tell me. Why were you with the rebels? You seem a little too..." He studied her trying to think of the correct word. "Normal"maybe, but he had an idea that Skylar was far from normal."

From Break Out by Nina Croft. This is another book I purchased at my library's used book store. I read Break Out when it first came out and loved it. It was a novella then and I have a ebook copy. Croft expanded it to book length so I decided to pick it up for my favorites shelf. If you like Science Fiction Romance and have not read this you should. It is book one in the Dark Desires series and a great introduction to Rico, a 2000 year old vampire, and the Blood Hunter, his space ship.

Page 56:

"I though you were staying in a hotel for the night did you change your mind?"

From Sweet Surprises by Shirlee McCoy. This is a book I received from Amazon Vine this week. I haven't started it yet but it does look good.

Awaken Me Darkly (Alien Huntress, #1)The Beginning:

"Midnight. The witching hour some say. Since it was 12:07 A.M. and I was standing over a dead body, I had to agree:

Page 56:

"Stop," he commanded the vehicle. The sound of squealing tires filled my ears, and I was suddenly thrust forward with the momentum of our skid and ultimate stop."

From Awaken Me Darkly, An Alien Huntress Novel, by Gena Showalter. This is the first book in the series. I purchased it quite a while ago when it went on sale for 2.99. It is still in my TBR pile but I have to say I do love the beginning.

The Beginning:

"When I started my website shesimmers.com, in 2008 I had no idea where it would lead. At the time my only goal was to document the best, most tried and true Thai recipes from my mother's cookbook collection. She had passed away a few weeks earlier and cooking, photographing and sharing the reck[es was my way of honoring her memory.

Page 56:

Stuffed Egg Crepes

"O, Cilantro, you enhance the inter value of anything you adorn, says Phak Chi Roi Na (Garnished with Cilantro), a megahit song from the later 1980s by Asanne and Wasan Chotikul, two of Thailand's most famous rockers.

From Simple Thai Food, Classic Recipes from the Thai Home Kitchen by Leela Punyaratabandhu. I love Thai dishes for several reasons. One, they taste great. Two, many do not use soy. Three when they call for flour it is rice or corn starch not wheat. As I am soy and gluten sensitive and love foods that taste good these fill the bill. While I have to search for some of the ingredients most are easy to find, easy to cook and very tasty to eat.

Page 56:

"I tried to keep my thoughts straight, but the conversation was spiraling away from me, and I didn't know how to stop it."

From Ruthless by John Rector. I won a copy of the book from Fresh Fiction. It came in the mail yesterday. I haven't started reading it yet but it sounds very interesting.

(I love this beginning. Caught me right away.)

From Iron and Blood, A Jake Dremet Adventure by Gail Z. Martin and Larry N. Martin. This is a new steampunk series by the husband and wife team. First time for them to write together. It comes out on July 7th. So far it is a very interesting tale.

From Obsession in Death by J. D. Robb. This time Dallas has an admirer and not the kind she wants.

The Beginning:

"They called it Bloody Bridge. it lay at the end of a dark, winding lane, far beyond the comforting flicker of the oil lamps of Sloane Square, beyond the last of the tumbledown cottages at the edge of a vast stretch of fields that showed only black on the moonless night."

Page 56

"When Sebastian then asked to see Mr. Austen's sister instead, the girl grew so flustered she dropped the card he handed her."

From the latest book in one of my favorite mystery series. Who Buries the Dead by C. S. Harris is part of the Sebastian St. Cyr Mystery series. I love the series and wait every year for the latest edition. I have finished it so have to wait another year for my next fix.

The Beginning:

"Mars is supposed to be dead, just a big hunk of cold rock hanging in space. Right now, though, Mars seemed very much alive - and pissed."

Page 56:

"They watched as a handful of rocks - some barely a centimeter in diameter, some nearing ten centimeters - continued to roll northward into the darker part of the cave."

From The Daedalus Incident by Michael J. Martinez. This is SciFi and unusual SciFi to boot. It moves between 2132 on a world much like ours and 1779 on a world that uses alchemy to travel between the planets. It seems one is effecting the other. This is a really interesting books and I will have a review up soon.

Page 56:

"But once I let go, the fear recedes.
I look around at the wormhole walls. It is oddly silent.
He is beside me, his light features serene."

From Rook - Allies's War Episodes 1-4 by JC Andrijeski. I won this book and two others in this series. I just started the first one and an only to page 67. So far I am wondering where it is going but it is interesting.

The Beginning:

Elina Shestakova of the Black Bear Riders of the Midnight Mountains of the Despair in the Far Reaches of the Steppes of the Outerplains - or just Elina for those who are lazy - carefully made her way up the mountain toward her destiny.

The Friday 56:

Their mother shifted to human and, with arms wide open, walked toward them.

"Clothes!" their father barked.

Rhiannon stopped,... "These tedious humans with their insecurities. Who has time for all this?"

From Light My Fire by G.A. Aiken. I requested the book from Netgalley because I love dragons. What I failed to notice was that it was #7 in a series so right now I am totally lost. I loved the beginning and all of chapter one but when chapter 2 and 3 came they left Elina and featured characters from previous books so I am lost.

Page 56

"Besides, the radio was sure to get nothing but evangelical channels and pass reports this far deep into the mountains, and the pain in his head was bad enough as it was."

From Time Thief by Katie MacAlister. This has been on my TBR shelf for a long time. I purchased it when I came out in May of 2013 and am just getting around to reading it.

From Goodreads:

Outcast due to their ability to manipulate time, shunned by the mortal and immortal worlds alike, a Traveller’s life is anything but easy.

Peter Faa is a member of the Watch tracking down a murderer, and unfortunately, all clues seem to point toward his own estranged family of Travellers. Any of his cousins could be guilty, but which one? They’re all experts in the art of stealing time...

After surviving a lightning strike, Kiya Mortenson is determined to get just one thing in her life right. And if that means taking a job as nanny to five pugs on a campsite in the Oregon wilderness, then so be it. It doesn’t hurt that the job comes with some spectacular male eye candy, including her new boss’s gorgeous grandson. If only she didn’t keep having this strange sense of deja vu...

When Peter discovers his own family is stealing time from Kiya, all bets are off. While she may drive him crazy at times, it’s clear that it’s not just lightning that’s creating some serious sparks between them. And he’s not going to let secrets, lies, or a devious murderer keep Kiya from where she belongs: at his side.

Boston, Massachusetts

As she wound down her run on the Boston waterfront, Emma Sharpe could feel the effects of jet lag in every stride."

Page 56:

"Ireland," she said and this time her smile revealed more of the ultraconfident Lucy Yankowski he knew so well."

From Harbor Island (A Sharpe & Donovan Novel #4) by Carla Neggers. This is a book I received from Amazon Vine so it will go to the top of my TBR pile. I have heard good things about the series and hope book four will work as a stand alone.
