Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 323 - The Duke That I Marry by Kathy Maxwell, The Good, the Bad and the Duke by Janna MacGregor

The Duke That I Marry (Spinster Heiresses, #3)The Duke That I Marry by Cathy Maxwell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It takes time to find out that you are made for each other. Nice ending to the Spinster Heiresses series. Willa wants what her friends have while Matthew needs money to keep his estate going. There was tensions and an added danger to their marriage. A nice mix of romance, misunderstanding and danger keeping the tension high. I liked how both worked to make their marriage work. Each admitting to some mistakes.

The Good, the Bad, and the Duke (The Cavensham Heiresses #4)The Good, the Bad, and the Duke by Janna MacGregor
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An interesting play on Home Alone. For these two it means they have time alone. Daphne and Paul have a long history. Unfortunately for Paul it is full of mistakes that have turned friends to enemies. What he does not know is that Daphne sees him in a very different light from the rest of her family. A nice set up for turning Paul from a villain to lover. There is a element of tension and danger in the story leading to the interaction between the two. A fun plot with plenty of romance, tension, danger and great characters to keep the story going.

I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 168 - If Ever I Should Love You by Cathy Maxwell, A Cowboy's Christmas by Vicki Lewis Thompson

If Ever I Should Love You (Spinster Heiresses, #1)If Ever I Should Love You by Cathy Maxwell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Leonie Charnock and the Earl of Rochdale have a history. That history destroyed Rochdale's military career while leaving Leonie unable to trust any man. Getting them together should be impossible. I really liked the fact that Leonie seemed very strong even as she battled with THE EVENT in her past. I liked how Rochdale could dream and then work to make it a fact not just a dream. The story of the two followed a familiar path but seemed fresh and new. Maxwell treats a serious subject while telling a interesting story.

A Cowboy's Christmas (The McGavin Brothers Book 6)A Cowboy's Christmas by Vicki Lewis Thompson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Hayley Bennett has her life in order but really does hate how her Mother keeps trying to fix her up every time she comes home for a visit. Badger Calhoun is just visiting his friend for Christmas. The two come up with a plan and of course it backfires. Badger is such a interesting character. He comes from wealth and does not need to work but is looking for a focus in his life. He is very contained and does not let many people in. Hayley is more open and shares her past, present and future while Badger does not. Makes for some tension as feeling develop between the two. A very good addition to the McGavin Brothers series.

The Scottish Witch (Chattan Curse #2) by Cathy Maxwell

The Scottish Witch (The Chattan Curse, #2)Historical Romance
Goodreads Summary:
New York Times bestselling author Cathy Maxwell continues her most powerful series with the latest novel about the Chattan Curse

Every woman has her dreams.

Portia Maclean believes she is beyond love and marriage. Then one moonlit night, while attempting a daring masquerade in a desperate bid to protect her family, she finds herself swept off her feet by a powerful stranger. His very touch makes her long for much more. But what will he do when once he discovers she has betrayed him?

Every man has his demons:

Harry Chattan is fighting for his family-their honor and their lives. For two hundred years the Chattan men have been destroyed by love.and now he's come to Scotland on the hunt for a witch who can break the legend's curse. Instead he finds himself bewitched by the tantalizing Portia. Determined to right legendary wrongs, Harry has vowed to fight the demons that torture him.
But will that battle destroy her as well?
The Scottish Witch continues that story of the Chattan Curse..  Harry Chattan want to save his brother, Neal, who is doomed if the curse is not lifted.  And the Curse.  If any Chattan falls in love it will cause their death.  Harry does not have much time.   He has come to Scotland hoping to find a witch who can lift the curse.
Portia Maclean needs money to support her family.  Harry is offering money to any witch.  Portia has found a book of curses.  For the money Harry is offering she can use the book and be a witch.
That is the set up and the story moves from there.  You also have a lovesick sister, a meddling mother, a jealous woman and the plot thickens.  Of course Harry falls in love with Portia and the curse kicks in. This is a great series.  The characters are well drawn, the plot interesting and the tension just keeps increasing.
This is the middle book so the curse is not lifted.  It is up to the last Chattan, Margaret, to find the cure to the curse.  That happens in the yet to be released next book.  There is a teaser for book three in the back of the Scottish Witch.
Harper Collins published The Scottish Witch by Cathy Maxwell in 2012.
I received an ARC of The Scottish Witch from Edelweiss.
