“You’re right. It’s the best offer. And I’ll take you up on it.” She placed her hand in his in order to get a hand up from the step. Mistake. His hand was warm, and the warmth seemed to flow up her arm and fill her with a sense of peace that was most disconcerting. Once on her feet, she gave a slight tug and he released his grip. Was she sorry? Silly thought. Her mind was just tired from the long and trying day. The fresh air would do the trick to put things in their proper perspective... including the man beside her.

A few minutes later, Calla felt the tenseness leave the neck muscles and the corners of her mouth curved upward of their own accord. The windows were down, and the pickup was making its way along the country lane as it followed the curves of the river, crisscrossing bridges from one side to the other as it went deeper into the tall canyon. The breeze ruffled through her hair. Here she was, taking a ride in a pickup, listening to a lively George Strait swing tune on the radio, and a good-looking cowboy beside her. If those people from her old life could see her now… would they think she had lost her mind? Did she think she had?

Or would they think she had finally found it? That sudden realization brought a strange feeling with it. If she didn’t know better, she’d think she had finally found where she belonged. But that couldn’t be… could it? The city life and a stately courtroom had been her mecca. How did things switch course in mid-stream on her? Calla’s gaze went to the man beside her and just then, he turned and gave her a look and smile that answered her unspoken question. Silly! She jerked her gaze back to the open window. How could he know what she was thinking? When she wasn’t sure of it herself?

Now, Kaitlyn comes back here because her grandmother needed to see her. I thought I was beyond all the feelings, all the memories and the pain from a dozen years ago. But turns out, I am still the world’s biggest fool. I put my heart out there once again. But I should have known it was too late.” He’d probably left out the more personal details, but what he told Jace was enough to have him shaking his head when Clay finally finished with his departure from the ranch that morning and his arrival at Lou’s Bar.

Lucas set the extinguisher on the ground and used a couple of fingers to push the hat back on his forehead, hands on his hips, obviously considering the options before him. “Do you have any other clothing with you, ma’am?” A furrowed brow preceded her reply. “Why are you calling me ‘ma’am? I’m not that old. And just who are you, anyway?” “Lucas McCann. I’m the sheriff of Joshua County, which is where you are at the moment. I use respectful manners and call you ‘ma’am because I don’t know your name.

The woman turned in a huff and stomped toward the porch steps behind them. Perhaps stomped wasn’t the right description Lucas amended, as he folded his arms across a broad chest and watched her negotiate the uneven stones of the walkway leading up to the porch...all in her ridiculously high heels. Of course, the sight of those long, tanned legs and spiky heels caused a definite stirring in his midsection. That realization made his jaw set harder as he sought for the calm control he always demonstrated when performing his duties-that is, until he came across her.

A slow shake of his head. “I have to hand it to you, lady. You’re one cool customer, under the circumstances. You also may be used to giving orders to people wherever you come from, except there’s one problem with that at this moment. You’re in my county now. Here, I give the orders and as a general rule, people follow them.”

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 98 - The Librarian and the Spy by Susan Mann, Silver Silence by Nalini Singh, His Country Bride by Debra Holt

The Librarian and the Spy by Susan Mann
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

First in a new series The Librarian and the Spy features some great characters. Quinn Ellington and James Lockwood connect from the very first meeting. Quinn is a reference librarian and James is not who he says he is. Mann does a great job plotting how the two go from help with reference questions to on the run for their lives. I loved the action. An extra plus was using the skills a librarian uses every day to solve the mystery of the missing weapons.


Silver Silence by Nalini Singh
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Silver Silence start off with a bang. Valentin Nikolaev is a bear shifter. Silence Merchant is part of a large family of Psy and is silent. We meet them on the first pages when Valentin arrived at Silence's door and has once again bypassed building security. I loved the start and through Singh delivered a winner. Unfortunately that feeling did not last. For me the story started to slow down and drag. While Silence and Valentine are very good characters the path to their relationship got old. Silver Silence does set up the characters, background and danger in this the first book in the new Psy-Changeling series. I do hope that the next books are a little more fast paced. This time I just felt that I had to read and read trying to get to the meat of the story.


His Country Bride by Debra Holt

A nice twist on the runaway bride theme. Ellie and Lucas meet when she is burning her wedding dress. Ellie is a city girl and Lucas is the sheriff who does not trust city girls. Of course sparks are flying from day one. It turns out Ellie is in danger and Lucas has to do his duty to protect her. A fun look at how duty and love can get all mixed up.
