Not A Mismatch

Alpha Night (Psy-Changeling Trinity, #4; Psy-Changeling, #19)Alpha Night by Nalini Singh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Two souls that connect immediately. It looks like they are a mismatch but turns out they are just what the other needed. A lot of romance mixed with some tension and danger. Betrayal is in the air, it just takes time to see who is doing the harm. Great addition to the story line. Strong characters and a strong beginning that just keep building as the story progresses.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 186 - In Farleigh Field by Rhys Bowen, The Hot Zone by Jayne Castle

In Farleigh FieldIn Farleigh Field by Rhys Bowen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Gemma Dawson does a very impressive job giving additional life to Rhys Bowen's characters. The story highlights the hardships during the early days of World War II. The characters are interesting and very well drawn. The feel of the story is realistic. The plot matches events as they happened in 1941. While some of the characters are fictional some are also real. This is a interesting and hard quit listening to book. While I had a very clear idea of one character who was a German sympathizer the other was a bit of a surprise. All in all a very good book to listen to.

The Hot Zone (Rainshadow, #3; Ghost Hunters, #11)The Hot Zone by Jayne Castle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lyle is Sedona Snow's dust bunny. Let me start by saying I WANT MY OWN DUST BUNNY!! This continues the story line set on Rainshadow. There are the usual characters and one is in danger. Sedona has escaped from being held in a underground lab and just wants to continue living her life in peace. Cyrus Jones is new to Rainshadow. When danger strikes he is there to protect Sedona. The plot is nothing new but it still held my attention. Sedona and Cyrus are both very interesting characters who are just a little outside the norm. Look for new twists in the aliens ruins on Rainshadow. Of course Lyle the dust bunny often steals the show. Great fun addition to the series.

Blurb for Overexposed:

Max and Taylor have spent the last decade running.
From the people who killed their families. From an organization that wants to experiment on them… dead or alive. And from an epidemic that could drive Taylor mad and unleash his psychic abilities. As someone whose mind can’t be read, Max is his link to sanity. The closer they grow, the more they question if friendship is enough.

And even fugitives need to earn a living.
As one of the world’s most notorious hacker teams, Max and Taylor burrow their way in to digital closets to find the darkest secrets of their powerful targets, and expose them for all to see. The biggest drawback—a list of ruthless enemies who want to see them crash and burn. Literally, if possible.
And now, they face their greatest danger—exposure.
Someone knows who they are, and is threatening to expose their secret. If they can’t stop their unknown assailant and hide their tracks, staying alive may be the least of their concerns. Staying sane may be impossible, and falling in love may be the most dangerous thing they do.

Excerpt:

Max exited at the next service station, and cued up for the first available ethanol pump. When a spot emptied, she slid in, becoming part of the ballet of an eternally crowded gas station. Her stomach growled, and heat flushed her face.

Taylor’s grin was tired, but it reached his eyes. “You must be feeling a little better.”

“A bit. When we hit Mesquite, we should find a twenty-four-hour buffet.” She was asking him to grab her something from the convenience store. Pre-packaged food wasn’t the best, but it was better than gnawing on her fingernails, and it would shut up her protesting stomach.

He’d given the all clear, and she hadn’t seen anyone for miles, but years of practice made it hard to switch off the contradictory words.

While she filled the tank, Taylor went in search of food for the second leg of their trip. He was better with people.

The pump ticked off numbers, the dollar count climbing much faster than the gallons. She let her gaze wander over the parking lot, occasionally drifting back to the familiar face inside.

An SUV pulled into the gas station, bypassed the line for the pumps, and circled the parking lot. Max’s mental alert meter chimed. It was probably nothing, but there was no reason to take chances. She stopped the pump, keeping her movements casual, and alternated her attention between the new arrival and Taylor, who was almost to the front of the line.

Please don’t let the SUV be here for us.

Max shoved her hands in her pockets to keep from drumming her fingers on her leg. When that didn’t work, she grabbed a squeegee, and tried to busy myself with washing the windshield. Horns blared, urging make room for the next car. The noise increased in volume and rhythm when the SUV parked a few feet back from her, angled so it wouldn’t block the other pumps, but cutting off anyone behind them and trapping her.

She bit the inside of her cheek, and focused on the sting of pain to keep panic from having its way.

The back door of the vehicle opened, and the doctor from the shelter climbed out. “Good evening, miss. It’s Max, right?”

Shit. Shitshitshitshitshit. Her earlier nausea surged back. She forced a tired smile. Would the irritated people around them, shouting now for them to move, be enough to block out the fact she didn’t emit any thoughts or emotions of her own? “Doctor. What are you doing all the way out here?” At least her voice didn’t shake.

“Something concerned me about your blood tests.” The doctor stood less than a foot away. “Do you have a minute to talk?”
They tracked Max hundreds of miles from the shelter to talk about a false pregnancy positive? She didn’t believe that for a second. “You said we were clean.” Every muscle in her body coiled, prepping for flight. “I’m sorry to be abrupt, doctor, but we’ve been driving all night. We’d like to find a motel sooner rather than later. If you leave me with your card, we can connect after I’ve had some sleep?”

He shot his hand out and grabbed her upper arm, digging his fingers in until her muscles screamed in protest.

                                                                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*waves* Hey, all. I’m Allyson Lindt. I write stories that tend toward the geeky, whether it’s paranormal sci-fi or contemporary romance.
World building is a huge part of the writing I do, especially with my science fiction and fantasy, but even when it comes to the contemporary side of things. And it’s not something I do on my own.
The process works something like this (but sometimes completely different, depending on the mood). I see an idea that makes me go “ooh, neat”. For instance, what if some people were really psychic or hard core empathic, and could read minds and emotions? What if that meant those people were on the top to-hire lists for most corporations, because hey, what’s a little corporate espionage between businesses?
Once I have a basic idea, I tell my sweetie, “Hey, there’s this thing in my head.” Because I’m a big picture person. She takes details to a whole new level though. Creates nooks and crannies and governments and universes and economic structures, all around a few sentences from me. Then hands them back over to me to build a story around.
My current new release, Over Exposed, is a lot like that. The idea struck me one day, and she helped me build it into more. The heroine is a hacker, living in a world of psychics, and she’s one in a million whose mind can’t be read. Which makes her a hot commodity when it comes to insider trading, and as good as dead if those same corporations catch up to her. She’s torn between the light in her world and her best friend, Taylor, and a mysterious figure lurking in the shadows, who could solve all her problems, or destroy her entire world.
It’s part of the Other Worlds box set, which is 20 books for only $.99, and it’s a full length novel, so it would be a steal alone for that price. And you get 19 other amazing books to go with it.
Fury of a Highland Dragon by Coreene Callahan - Book Blast and Giveaway
Fury of a Highland Dragon
by Coreene Callahan
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Paranormal Romance

BLURB:

Trapped by a future she refuses to face…

Accused of cyber espionage by the United States government, ethical hacker Ivy Macpherson is now on the FBI’s most wanted list. Out of options, she runs, desperate for time to prove her innocence. When fate takes an unexpected turn, bringing her face-to-face with Tydrin, she must decide—trust a man more dangerous than the hunters on her Ivy Macpherson, trail to keep her safe. Or risk capture by a covert agency well known for ruthlessness.

Condemned by a past he doesn’t want to remember…

Cursed with a terrible temper, Scottish dragon-warrior Tydrin struggles to atone for a mistake that took innocent lives. Unable to forgive himself, he returns to the scene of his crime in hopes of finding absolution, but discovers a woman in need of his help instead. Intervening in the nick of time, he whisks Ivy to safety, only to realize the daughter of the family he wronged is the one destined to steal his heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Feet rooted to the ground, Tydrin stared at the female. He blinked to clear his vision. Nothing. No change in his visual field and—bloody hell. It couldn’t be. He must be seeing things. Must be imagining the impossible. But no matter how many times he forced himself to refocus, nothing changed. She remained front and center, kneeling in the dirt, head bowed, hands resting on her thighs. The submissive position drew him tight, messing with his ability to think for a second.
Tydrin shook his head.
The movement knocked brain cells into motion and…Good Christ. Unbelievable. She was real. He wasn’t imagining her. Or the radiating warmth frothing around her like sea foam. Glowing bright blue, the female’s aura lit up the space around her. Her bio-energy hummed and his dragon half woke, setting off a dangerous chain reaction. Bone-deep hunger punched through. His body came alive. His mind dulled, blocking out everything but her. Long red hair pulled into a messy bun, she shuffled closer to the headstone. Mumbling another apology, she cleared debris away from the granite base. The task was one he usually preformed. On this date, every year when he visited. Right now, though, he didn’t care about his mission.
Or about paying his respects.
Struck stupid by her, only one thought registered—a high-energy female here…in middle the of Aberdeen.
Tydrin frowned. Holy shite. He was in trouble. Neck deep and sinking fast without any idea how to control his reaction to her.
Musing Monday's September 15, 2014
TC is in the sun musing about the chipmunk she sees out the window.
Hopefully that is all she does.  So far this month she has presented me
 with two chipmunks - one alive and one dead but both in my bedroom.
Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week.Musing Mondays is sponsored by Should Be Reading.
• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.
• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
• Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to talk.
Today I am musing about the second book in Robin D. Owens
Ghost Seer Series.  I just finished Ghost Layer.  I loved the first book in the series Ghost Seer and hoped that the second was not a disappointment.  It was not.  Ghost Layer has a great plot, interesting new characters, impressive writing and the return of the two main characters to carry the story.
When I first met Clare and Zach both were struggling with new and very hard to deal with problems.  Their instant attraction added to their struggle as both felt they were moving too fact but like a train wreck could not seem to do anything about it.  The attraction is still there and so are the problems but they are coming to terms with the problems and enjoying the attraction.
There is a great new ghost that needs to be sent on his way but first he needs to find out who murdered him. Since Clare only sees ghosts from the late 1800's the trail is really cold.  But if it is cold why is someone targeting Clair.  Great mystery, wonderful romance, and interesting characters make for a really good story.
Robyn D. Owens has the start of another great series. Ghost Layer can stand alone but read Ghost Seer first.  That way you are in one the beginning of the series.
The Bride Wore Pearls by Liz Carlyle
The Bride Wore PearlsHistorical Romance
Since Goodreads did not have much to say about The Bride Wore Pearls by Liz Carlyle  I had to pull from Amazon.  Here is what Amazon had to say about the book:
"Beneath the elegant facade of Victorian high society, the rules of danger and desire are the only rules that apply for the mysterious men of the St James Society. New York Times bestseller Liz Carlyle carries readers deep into this realm of intrigue and passion once more in her breathtaking historical romance sizzler, The Bride Wore Pearls. The third book in her sexy, compelling, action-packed series, The Bride Wore Pearls is a scorching story of a very proper lady who flees her home in a far corner of the British Empire, entrusting her safety and her heart to a dangerous outlaw in Victorian London"
This series features the men of the St. James Society.  Lady Anisha Stafford is the sister of one of the members of the St James Society.  She has mixed blood from her Indian mother and her English father.  She has come back to England with her two boys after the death of her English husband to make her home with her brother Lord Ruthveyn.  The first person she meets is Rance Welham another member of the St. James Society.
Characters:  This is very much a character driven story and both of the main characters are unique.  Anisha has to balance her Indian side with her English blood.  She wants her sons to be accepted so she tries to downplay her unique bloodline.  Rance Welham was falsely accused of two different crimes and is trying to clear his name.  He can accept Anisha as she is but does not want her to be tainted by his bad reputation. There is also one reoccurring character from book before this series.  It is always fun to see what he adds to the mix.
Plot:  The entire plot revolved around Rance’s quest to clear his name.  There are several red herrings before we find the true villain.  Anisha’s determination to help adds to the plot.
Worldbuilding:  There is a paranormal addition to the times in this series.  Each member of the St. James Society has some type of paranormal skill.  Each book adds layers to this world.
Tension:  There is plenty of tension in the story.  There are people stalking Rance.  There is the attraction between Anisha and Rance.  There is the quest to find the truth.  All combined to keep me reading.
The Bride Wore Pearls is a good addition to the St. James Society series.  Pick it up for an enjoyable read.
Avon published The Bride Wore Pearls by Liz Carlyle in 2012.
