Sleep with the Lights On by Maggie Shayne

The Prologue was so creepy I wondered if I could stand to read the book; then I got hooked and could not put it down. It is a paranormal mystery/romance and the start to a new series featuring Rachel de Luca and Mason Brown. After I finished reading Sleep With the Lights On I immediately went to NetGalley to get Wake To Darkness the next book in the series.

For Heaven's Eyes Only (Audio Book) by Simon R. Green

A recent Musing Monday's post was about listening to audio books.  I said I keep one going in my car all the time and that it is a way for me to check out new authors and series.  I just finished listening to For Heaven's Eyes Only by Simon Green.  I have read other series by Simon Green and wondered if I would like this one.


This is book five in Simon Green's The Secret Histories series.  The series features field agent Edwin "Eddie" Drood - aka secret agent Shaman Bond.  


"A horrifying presence is growing and the threat of a mysterious Great Sacrifice looms.  Although Eddie has always been something of an outside, he - with help from his witch lover Molly Metcalf - will have to rise to the occasion to help thwart the menace and save his people."


For Heaven's Eyes Only was fun to listen too but I would not want to read the book.  There is a lot of blood and gore.  Saving the world involved killing a lot of people.  If you read the book don't expect any happy ending.  Once the current problem is solved the book ends with a cliff-hanger that will be the theme for the next book.

The Ghost and Mrs. McClure by Alice Kimberly

Paranormal Mystery

This seems to be my week for ghost stories. This time it is a mystery. The Ghost and Mrs. McClure published by Berkley Prime Crime is the first in a series that has 4 published books with a fifth coming out in January. PI Jack Shield was killed in 1949 in a book store in Quindicott, Rhode Island. He cannot leave the store and has been haunting it ever since. Penelope Thornton-McClure and her Aunt Sadie are updating the book store. They have changed the name to Buy the Book and have a bestselling author on hand to bring in new business. The author is killed in the bookstore. Penelope and Jack find that they can “talk to each other”. This is the first time Jack has been able to communicate with anyone. He and Penelope team up to solve the murder. Jack is a typical 1940’s Pi so he is the brains and Penelope, a modern woman, is the legs. It is a cute book, easy to read and only 261 pages long. If you want a fun read I recommend The Ghost and Mrs. McClure. I give it 3 thumbs up.

A side note. "Alice Kimberly is the pen name for Alice Alfonsi, who writes with her husband, Marc Cerasini." They also write The Coffeehouse Mysteries.
