Interwoven

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Belle Hamilton is a romantic at heart. She's engaged to the love of her life and dreams of marriage, children and a happily ever after. Belle’s world is close to perfect until one afternoon she makes a decision she can't take back.

In the blink of an eye, Belle’s life spirals out of control. She loses everything that is dear to her and is forced to flee to the other side of the world where she meets Andrea, a local bartender from Rome, and develops an unexpected connection with him.

Can they break through the complications of past hurts and a long-distance relationship to make it work or will one terrifying night in Paris end it before it had a chance to begin?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPTS:
Belle woke to the trill of her phone. She’d fallen asleep on the balcony, exhausted, her coffee cold in the cup beside her. The sun had climbed higher into the sky and a lunch crowd had gathered on the street below. It was midday.
She scrambled inside, found her phone wedged between two lounge cushions, and stared at the screen. It was her mother. ‘Hello?’
‘Darling.’
Belle tried not to sound disappointed. ‘Hi, Mum.’
‘Not who you were expecting, then?’
‘No. It’s fine. What’s up?’
‘I rang to invite you to tea this afternoon. Are you free?’
She was free. She probably had a whole weekend of being free, thanks to her sacrilegious fiancĂ©. ‘Today’s not good. I think I’m coming down with a cold.’
‘You should come to tea.’
‘Another time, Mum.’
‘Ben was here. To see your father.’
Belle straightened, her interest piqued. ‘He was? When?’
‘This morning.’
‘What did he say?’
‘I’m not too sure. They went straight into your father’s office. They were in there a while. You know how the two of them can be.’
Yes, Belle knew exactly how the two of them could be. Thick as thieves.
‘I’m guessing not everything is as it should be between the two of you,’ her mother said gently. ‘Ben could barely look me in the eye when he came out. I knew something was going on.’
‘Things aren’t great, Mum. I’m worried about the wedding. I think we might be over.’
‘What happened?’
‘It’s a long story,’ Belle said miserably. ‘He won’t take any of my calls but it seems he wasted no time in speaking to Dad about us.’
‘Why don’t you come and talk to your father?’ her mother encouraged. ‘He might need to hear your side of the story.’
Her side of the story? What was there to tell? Ben was the one who’d been unfaithful. He was the one who wouldn’t take her calls or explain himself. Was it too much to ask that he leave her father out of it?
It seemed she had two options. She could wither in her flat buried beneath the unfairness of it all or she could lift her chin, drag herself to her parents’ house and try to sort through the debris that was now her relationship. Neither sounded appealing.
‘I’ll be there at two.’
‘Lovely, darling.’
Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 186 - In Farleigh Field by Rhys Bowen, The Hot Zone by Jayne Castle
In Farleigh FieldIn Farleigh Field by Rhys Bowen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Gemma Dawson does a very impressive job giving additional life to Rhys Bowen's characters. The story highlights the hardships during the early days of World War II. The characters are interesting and very well drawn. The feel of the story is realistic. The plot matches events as they happened in 1941. While some of the characters are fictional some are also real. This is a interesting and hard quit listening to book. While I had a very clear idea of one character who was a German sympathizer the other was a bit of a surprise. All in all a very good book to listen to.
The Hot Zone (Rainshadow, #3; Ghost Hunters, #11)The Hot Zone by Jayne Castle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Lyle is Sedona Snow's dust bunny. Let me start by saying I WANT MY OWN DUST BUNNY!! This continues the story line set on Rainshadow. There are the usual characters and one is in danger. Sedona has escaped from being held in a underground lab and just wants to continue living her life in peace. Cyrus Jones is new to Rainshadow. When danger strikes he is there to protect Sedona. The plot is nothing new but it still held my attention. Sedona and Cyrus are both very interesting characters who are just a little outside the norm. Look for new twists in the aliens ruins on Rainshadow. Of course Lyle the dust bunny often steals the show. Great fun addition to the series.
Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 187 - Into the Fire by Elizabeth Moon, Survive the Night by Katie Ruggle
Into the Fire (Vatta's Peace, #2)Into the Fire by Elizabeth Moon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Just when Admiral Kylara Vatta thinks that she is home free everything falls apart. There are enough problems in Into the Fire to fuel the plot for several books. It was interesting to see how each of the characters reacted to the danger they find themselves in. Of course Ky does seem to win in the end but not until several of the key characters are almost killed. There is one characters who finally comes into her own leaving Ky feeling very puzzled by her reaction to events. A interesting read filled with danger and tension. Understanding the backstory and the world building worked best if book one in the Vatta's Peace series was read first. Into the Fire continues the interesting plot started in book one.
I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Survive the Night (Rocky Mountain K9 Unit, #3)Survive the Night by Katie Ruggle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
If you like over the top danger Survive the Night is the book for you. It seems the bad guys have enough weapons and people to take on an entire town. Why? Because there are two women there that are a big danger to them. This time it is Sarah Clifton who arrives trying to escape her brother who wants to marry her off to a member of another crime family. K9 Officer Otto Gunnersen takes one look at Sarah and knows he has to defend her from all comers. This has a very sweet romance between the two, danger that causes a very large amount of damage, tension from first to last page, and a continuation of the plot started in the first book. This can be read as a standalone but is much better if you have read the previous books. Ever way pick it up to read.
I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 188 - Her Last Goodbye by Melinda Leigh, The Caledonian Gambit by Dan Moren
Her Last Goodbye (Morgan Dane #2)Her Last Goodbye by Melinda Leigh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I really enjoy Chris Dukehar's performance. I have listened to several books she has narrated and like her style in all. Morgan and Lance continue to take dangerous and interesting cases. This one had several surprises as they tried to first find a kidnapped woman and then find the man responsible. This had a plot that build keeping interest up, characters that fit the story line and a surprise romance.
The Caledonian GambitThe Caledonian Gambit by Dan Moren
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Eli Brody does not fit anywhere. After all everyone thinks he is dead. That is the start to a thrill a minute space opera with some science mixed in. Eli is tasked to find who and what is being developed and used as a weapon and stop its use. He has to deal with family, spies, old gang members, and not knowing who to trust. This is a fun read with a very well developed plot, fully fleshed out characters, and good world building. This ended with the mystery solved but there could be a interesting follow up. So far I have not seen any indication that one is in the works.
Short and Sweet Audio Book Reviews #200 - The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly, Curious Minds by Janet Evanovich
The Brass Verdict (Mickey Haller, #2; Harry Bosch Universe, #18)The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I think this is where Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch first appear in the same book. I have not read the Bosch books so that is why I think and do not know for sure. I listened to The Lincoln Lawyer and loved it. As a result I am binge listening to the Mickey Haller series. There is a change of voice and Peter Giles is new voice. I liked Adam Grupper's voice better but have gotten used Peter. This one is a little different. Mickey inherited a murdered attorney's cases and one turns out to be very dangerous. The ending is unexpected and leaves Mickey in danger for his life. Since I am already listening to book three I know he survives.
Curious Minds (Knight and Moon, #1)Curious Minds by Janet Evanovich
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The dialog is what you would expect from Evanovich and I am sure that you would get some good laughs from reading the book but for me what makes the audio book is the voice of Lorelei King. She makes Riley Moon the perfect foil for Emerson Knight. Moon is very practical and calls Emerson on many of his actions. This is fast paced, filled with great characters and great dialog. In addition the interaction between Riley and Emerson is full of laughs. First in a new series I listened to book two first and the series starts great and just gets better and better.
Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 187 - Bad Bachelor by Stefanie London, The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman
Bad Bachelor (Bad Bachelors, #1)Bad Bachelor by Stefanie London
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Reed McMahon does not want any attachments. He is the king of one night stands. Darcy Greer is afraid of making another mistake by choosing the wrong man. This is a familiar trope with Reed the damaged soul and Darcy the unlikely choice. I enjoyed the story and the Bad Bachelor app is something that could show up at any time. First in a new series it provides background for this book and futures books in the series. A nice read but don't look for any surprises in how everything turns out. Story is very predictable.
I received a free copy of the book in return for an honest review.
The Masked City (The Invisible Library, #2)The Masked City by Genevieve Cogman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Once again the voice of the reader grated on my nerves at first and then I got used to it. She did a very good job of giving the story the right feeling and the story was very good. This is one of those that end with the fate of one of the main characters up in the air. The plot was interesting, the characters fit the world they live in and the action kept up non- stop. A nice second book in the series. It told a complete story with the main problem solved. Still it had a little of a cliffhanger ending making me wish I had book three in hand.
