Excerpt):
Caleb groaned and flipped over on his hard, motel
mattress. Seconds later he flipped the other way. He had known he wouldn’t
sleep before he ever even lay down.
Sighing, he turned on the bedside lamp and sat up.
Melissa, the woman who was on maternity leave,
would come back to the clinic in four weeks time. That’s when his temporary job
with Aria would end, and he didn’t want it to end. As ridiculous as it sounded,
he had fallen hard for Aria De Luca. Having her in his arms tonight had been
the sweetest form of torture he could imagine, but he liked more than just
Aria’s looks. He liked her kind heart and the way she treated the animals just
as much.
Scrambling to his feet, he left his room and went
to the vending machines outside his door to buy a pack of crackers. Just
because the doc was a kind woman didn’t mean he was anything more to her than
an employee. All he’d seen in her eyes tonight was pleasure over a nice evening
dancing and talking to friends.
It was better that way. Even if she did feel the
same way he did, what could he offer her? He didn’t have a penny to his name or
any prospects for the future. Besides that, her daddy didn’t like him.
Be careful. Don’t let yourself get hurt again.

Cantrell was born and raised in South Carolina where she obtained a master’s
degree in personnel services from Clemson University. She is a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international
honorary society for women educators and Romance Writers of America. Her first novel, A New Leaf, was the
2003 winner of the Timeless Love Contest.
When she’s not writing or teaching, she enjoys movies, quilting,
reading, and collecting vintage Christmas ornaments.
