Charles Cornick and Anna Latham are two of my favorite characters. They are such opposites and that is what makes them such a good fit. Once again they are off on a mystery and it just keep getting bigger and bigger. While they work through what is going on we get to see more the two and their relationship. Big surprise at the end. I didn't. see it coming.

Solid Plot

Smoke Bitten by Patricia Briggs

Mercy has a lot on her plate and more than one someone is after her. There are some really interesting additions to this series in Smoke Bitten. Adam is having trouble, a new wolf pack is trying to take over and Underworld is up to something. Some things are solved and some are hanging. A good solid plot arc with more to come.

Short and Sweet Book Reviews # 292 - Hidden Sun by Raine Fenn, Masques by Patricia Briggs

Hidden Sun: Shadowlands Book I by Jaine Fenn

Hidden Sun follows three different people giving you three different points of view. It is not until the end that you find out how the three are connected. Shadowlands and Skylands are two very different parts of this unusual world. Each is inhabited by different types. The world and characters Fenn built are very different. It took me awhile to wrap my head around what she created and to become invested in the characters but the wait was worth it. This was a slow start and at the end it left a lot unanswered and available to use in the next book.

Masques by Patricia Briggs

I saw this several times and when Audible put it on special I picked it up.  I love Briggs' Mercy Thompson and Anna and Charles books and wanted to give this a try.  Briggs herself says this was not her best book. It is her first published book and it showed. In spite of that I found that I loved the two main characters. Aralorn and her wolf are at the heart of a large problem. Someone is trying to take over the entire world using magic and Aralorn and her wolf, both shape shifters, are the best bet to stopping what is happening. Listen to what Briggs says about the book before you start. It makes it easier to enjoy the story and over look the fact that the writing is not the best. Katherine Kellgren does a really good job bringing the story to life.

I hit the audio books at the library this week.  I have been reading so much I decided to rest my eyes a bit.  Even so I also added to ebooks.  Fatal Deception and Fatal Mistake by Marie Force are the next ones in the Fatal series.

On the audio side I got

Fair Game by Patricia Briggs - This is one of my favorite series and I read the book when it came out.  Enjoyed visiting with Charles and Anna again.
Possession by Kat Richardson - Another series I have followed.  This one is out of order but I am not having any trouble following the story.
Miss Julia Inherits a Mess by Ann B. Ross - I listened to another one in this series.  Miss Julia is a little over the top but she is a fun read.
Coyote Blue by Christopher Moore - Started this one but it did not hold my attention.  I sounded like fun but that just did not come through.

From Iron Kissed by Patricia Briggs. This is book three in the Mercy Thompson series. I started reading the Charles and Anna spin off from this series and then went over and read the current Mercy books. Now I am going back and reading the first five that I missed. Sometimes this does not work well but with this series it is keeping my interest and making me want to go back and re-read the latest books.

I got four books I had on reserve at the library this week.  They are Karen Memory by Elizabeth Bear, Prudence by Gail Carriger, by J.D. Robb and Who Buries the Dead by C. S. Harris.  

I also checked out three books by Patricia Briggs.  Two are Mercy Thompson novels;  Blood Bound and Bone Crossed.  On the Prowl which has the first Charles and Anna Story and one Science Fiction Short story collection - Magic City, Recent Spells edited by Paula Guran.  I started out reading the Charles and Anna books by Briggs.  I then read the latest Mercy Thompson books.  Now I am going back to read the early books.

I won The Calling (Laws of Segregation Book 2 from Nina Croft, purchased Reining in Justice by Delores Fossen and got two free ebooks –Melis’s Gambit by Ann Gimple and Hunter by Cynthia Lucas.

Dead Heat (Alpha & Omega #4) by Patricia Briggs

Dead Heat is a great addition to the Alpha & Omega series.  I love Charles and Ann the main characters in the series.  Both are such fascinating people.  Briggs always writes a great story but I think she outdid herself with this one.

Charles has a picture of himself that does not match what Anna sees.  He sees himself as entirely dark due to his job in the pack.  The plot and story line in Dead Heat brings Anna’s picture of Charles into much clearer focus.  Safe and very strong is a big part of how Anna sees him and in Dead Heat we see how others view him the same.  As the story progresses Anna makes progress in letting Charles see how other see him.  It helps change how he views himself and how he sees future events and the people in his life. 

Dead Heat is very character driven and the story allows both Anna and Charles to become much better developed.  There are some very interesting side characters in the story that help in that development.  The plot continues the story line from previous books in both the Alpha & Omega series and the Mercy Thompson series.  Once again the Fae are up to no good and must be stopped.

Dead Heat has great action, a well throughout plot and wonderful characters.  I think it is the best book so far in the series.  It took three years to get this next story in the series.  Hopefully it will not take that long to get book 5.

I did request and receive four ARC’s from Netgalley this week.  One will be out in February, two in March and one in April.

Vision in Silver by Ann Bishop is the next book in the Others series.  This series is not for everyone.  If I had read the blurb before I check the first one out as an audio book at the library I probably would have put it back without listening.  Once I listened I was hooked.

I love Charles and Anna and have been looking forward to their next book for quite a while.  I immediately requested Dead Heat.  I think Patricia Briggs did a great job spinning the Alpha and Omega series off from her Mercy Thompson books.

Impulse by Dave Bara is military science fiction. I am not a fan of any war but I do love military science fiction.  Go figure.

Joe Steele by Harry Turtledove is another of his alternate histories.  I think he comes up with some very interesting stories when he starts changing how things happen.
