My book beginning this week is from Fiction River, a new anthology series featuring volumes that appear every two month. Each volume has a different theme or genre, and often has a different editor. Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch are the overall series editors, approving the content.
I just received the December 13 edition titled Hex in the City featuring urban fantasy short stories. My beginning is from the third story in the issue, Speechless in Seattle by Lisa Silverthorne. This short story features a wizard whose spell goes a little wrong. Here is the beginning:
"Thunder rumbled through the evening sky as storm clouds rolled off Elliot Bay where Brant Trenerry stood in Kerry Park staff raised, ready to change the world."
Check out the Fiction River web site to see the themes for upcoming issues.

Sounds fascinating...not necessarily one I would have picked up, but I like the play on words.
Thanks for stopping by my blog.
Hi Jo,
This sounds like a great little magazine and even though urban fantasy probably wouldn't be my favourite selection, as they are only short stories, they might be a good place to 'cut my teeth' on a new genre.
Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend,
Yvonne
Hi Jo,
That looks like a great little magazine and although I am not a fan of Urban Fantasy, being as they are only short stories, this might be the ideal way to 'cut my teeth' on discovering and possibly enjoying a new genre.
Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend,
Yvonne
Sounds like something major is going to happen. :)
THANKS for sharing, and enjoy your weekend.
I didn't have time to post a book beginnings so I am leaving a link to another fun post you may want to check out.

What Would You Give Your Book Character For Christmas?
That's a great beginning. I don't read many short stories for some reason, but these sound like fun.
