Book Beginning, January 17, 2014

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading.

My book beginning this week is from a really fun book.  Libriomancer by Jim C. Hines is about magic, supernatural threats, and books.  Here is the beginning:

"Some people would say it's a bad idea to bring a fire-spider into a public library.  Those people would probably be right, but it was better than leaving him alone in the house for nine hours straight.  The one time I tried, Smudge had expressed his displeasure by burring through the screen that covered his tank, burrowing into my laundry basket, and setting two week's worth of clothes ablaze."

Here is how Goodreads describes the book:

"Isaac Vainio is a Libriomancer, a member of the secret organization founded five centuries ago by Johannes Gutenberg. Libriomancers are gifted with the ability to magically reach into books and draw forth objects. When Isaac is attacked by vampires that leaked from the pages of books into our world, he barely manages to escape. To his horror he discovers that vampires have been attacking other magic-users as well, and Gutenberg has been kidnapped.

With the help of a motorcycle-riding dryad who packs a pair of oak cudgels, Isaac finds himself hunting the unknown dark power that has been manipulating humans and vampires alike. And his search will uncover dangerous secrets about Libriomancy, Gutenberg, and the history of magic."

Hi Jo,

Whilst this probably isn't a book for me, I love the sound of that synopsis so much!

I am not too sure about the spider though, what a fantastic opening few lines!! I am chief spider catcher in our house, but even I draw the line at something which sounds so deadly and presumably wouldn't like being forcibly removed from the house!!

Great lines, thanks for sharing and have a great weekend,

Yvonne

I could not locate your contact information so I am posting here. My name is David Meredith and I very recently came across your book blog. I have just released a novel - The Reflections of Queen Snow White - on Amazon.com in the Kindle Store this past October and would be happy to send you a complimentary copy if you would be interested in reviewing it. I have included the dust cover synopsis below. If you are interested, just reply to this e-mail and I will happily send you your free copy right away. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response!

What happens when "happily ever after" has come and gone?

On the eve of her only daughter, Princess Raven's wedding, an aging Snow White finds it impossible to share in the joyous spirit of the occasion. The ceremony itself promises to be the most glamorous social event of the decade. Snow White’s castle has been meticulously scrubbed, polished and opulently decorated for the celebration. It is already nearly bursting with jubilant guests and merry well-wishers. Prince Edel, Raven's fiancé, is a fine man from a neighboring kingdom and Snow White's own domain is prosperous and at peace. Things could not be better, in fact, except for one thing:

The king is dead.

The queen has been in a moribund state of hopeless depression for over a year with no end in sight. It is only when, in a fit of bitter despair, she seeks solitude in the vastness of her own sprawling castle and climbs a long disused and forgotten tower stair that she comes face to face with herself in the very same magic mirror used by her stepmother of old.

It promises her respite in its shimmering depths, but can Snow White trust a device that was so precious to a woman who sought to cause her such irreparable harm? Can she confront the demons of her own difficult past to discover a better future for herself and her family? And finally, can she release her soul-crushing grief and suffocating loneliness to once again discover what "happily ever after" really means?

Only time will tell as she wrestles with her past and is forced to confront The Reflections of Queen Snow White.

I'm intrigued by the premise of this book, even though it is a genre I don't usually read. The beginning made me want to know more.
Here's the link to my Friday post: BETWEEN LONESOME AND TEXAS.
